YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB NOTES 30th May 2010

The Mechanical Sunday Spin, 30th May 2010

The Muintir Na Tire Charity Cycle was to take place last Saturday but due to unforeseen circumstances, it had to be cancelled. With such a challenging spin planned for that weekend we decided to due the course anyway as our Sunday Spin. An 8.00am sharp depart from Moby Dicks led us out the Tallow Road which we duly ascended at a very comfortable pace after which we dropped down into Tallow in good time and well warmed up. From there we climbed again up the Fermoy road before dropping down into Fermoy where we were greated by some droplets of rain. We were due to stop for the tea in Fermoy but since the weather was starting to turn we rode on through Fermoy and climbed the wearing down old main road all the way to Watergrasshill where the tea and rolls were very welcome. Refueled and ready for road, we traveled back the main road to the Tunnel before turning back for home. With the wind picking up behind our back we cruised along the main road past Little Island, Carrigtwohill, Midleton, Castlemartyr and Killeagh before arriving home to Youghal for around 12.00 pm. A fine group of 12 completed the 130km route as another long distance training spin was completed in preparation for the summer objectives. Point of note: Team Trek are trying to make a move again on the Club as a new machine was again on show for her maiden voyage last Sunday and what a voyage she had Tony. Well ware !!!!

The 10 O’ Clock group consisting of 8 riders also gathered on the good morning. Mechanical trouble arrived however before they even started with seat post trouble for some which could not be resolved the remaining 7 riders departed and traveled out the main road to Cork before turning down the bog road for Kilcreeden. Second mechanical of the day arrived just before Kilcreeden when a pair of cranks tried to break free. Neutral Service had to be called and another forced abandonment had to take place. Going again the remaining 6 riders rode onto Kilcreeden and Garryvoe. From there they rode onto Ladysbridge for the scheduled coffee and cream bun stop. Why they stopped we do not know as they hadn’t even worked up a sweat with all the previous stopping. Tanked up the rode onto Castlemartyr and Killeagh before arriving back in Youghal for around 12.15 with another challenging 44.78km completed at an average speed of 19.1km/hr, or so Sean says, for those who participated.

The sneaky training would appear to have caught on to the 10 O’ Clock groupetto as some of the elder states men of the Club were spotted doing the Dromina Drive loop last Wednesday. Keep it up lads. It doesn’t go un-noticed.

The Frank O'Rourke Trophy held in Camross in Co. Wexford.

Oh lads, oh lads, oh lads. What a weekend for Youghal CC. While it was a mechanical free for all in the County of Cork, two men, who shall remain nameless at this point, headed for Wexford for their second outing of their racing season. And what a race it was for those who participated. 181 competitors took to the line across the various grades of racing while our boys and a dozen or so of other riders watched on as they passed them on the way into Camoss. Did the hour change the night before ?, or did ye sleep in ?, will we ever no what really happened ?. Don’t worry about it boys, it happens to the best of us, next time dough, get the right start time and ye will have a better day out. But sure wasn’t it a good day for a Sunday drive in the car anyway lads !!
