Youghal Cycling Club Notes – Sunday 29th April 2012

Summer League Competition is hotting up after three rounds of the Youghal Cycling Club Summer League. We have had 33 riders line out over the three weeks. The first two rounds of the league have been 30km road races around the Gortaroo circuit. On week 3 we held our first hill climb time trial. This was a short, 7km climb from the Rhincrew Roundabout up the Tallow Road and finishing at Knocknagappagh. Twenty five riders lined up on the night and they were set off in 30 second intervals. On the night it was Eamonn Flanagan that took the honours. He was followed by Eoin Whyte in second position and Tony Walsh in third place. Strong riding over the three weeks has Ina Walsh holding the overall lead. To ensure all riders are in with a competitive chance the league is handicapped from Categories 1 to 7. After round 3 the overall standings are as follows:

Round 4 will be held on Thursday 3rd May. We are meeting at Summerfield Cross from 6:30pm with the first racers heading off at 7:00pm. The format of this weeks be a handicapped 30km road race.

Racing It was off to the Kingdom last weekend as our racers went to compete in the John Drumm Memorial Road Race hosted by Currow Cycling Club. The route was a challenging 85km circuit around the rolling hills of Tralee. Continuing his run of good form it was Eoin Whyte who had to close down a breakaway group with 8km to the finish line. Within the last 500m Eoin closed the gap and achieved an 8th place placing. Well done again Eoin!

Sportiffs The Club are now in preparation for the annual Tour De Cure. This is being hosted by Midleton Wheelers and is supported by Stephen Roche. The tour has three routes, a 50km, 100km and 160km. Please watch the facebook page for further details.

Club Spins With very strong northerly winds blowing all weekend it was only the die hards that were prepared to jump into the lycra stripes last weekend, head out into the elements for a 4-5 hour spin, and test their endurance against the best the elements could through at them. Still it is great to report that we had 4 different groups out over the weekend as normal, with almost 40 riders donning the Club strip. The Saturday group headed to Tallow and Rathcormac before enjoying the tail wind all the way home. On Sunday our 8am group headed to Tallow and on towards Fermoy before switching back into Conna, Ballynoe, Dungourney and the main road back to Youghal with a testing 70 miles on the legs at an average moving speed of 16mph.
