Youghal Cycling Club Notes – Sunday 24th November

November 24, 2013 at 7:50pm

Club Spins Another weekend of dry mild weather meant only one thing for the men and ladies of Youghal Cycling Club – loads of opportunities to get and grab a spin or two.

Saturday had two groups leave from Lidl. First up saw John Bulman road captain his peloton at 9am and they headed east into Waterford to take in a 85km spin, 670m climbing at a average speed of 26.5kph. Shortly afterwards the next group rolled out and headed west towards Midleton. This group was captained by Trevor Montgomery and he led them around a 75km route with 530m climbing at an average speed of 26.5kph also.

Sunday morning again saw big numbers rolling into Lidl carpark at 9am. There was much banter as people have been taking metal notes on the miles some of the lads are covering. It was widely reported that John Bulman had been out for the past 5 days in a row. We wonder what he is training for??

Shortly after 9am the first group rolled out led by Owen Fox. He led the group on a very nice course around east Cork that brough them up to Carrigtwohill through the back roads. This was an 85km spin with 600m climbing at an average speed of 25.5kph Next out were led by Jon Flynn. He also headed east to Midleton and took a loop back via Tallow. A rolly 90km route with 630m climbing at an average speed of 26.5kph.

All in all a great weekends cycling. It was great to see some new members arriving up to the regular spins and even more encouraging to see riders jump across the different groups to mix it up a little. As you will see the routes and pace are very similar at this time of year and members are encouraged to work on the social side of cycling by mixing it up and having the craic. There will be no rider left on the road!!

Quote of the week has to be from Jon Flynn as he was riding out by Conna. A large dog came out and started chasing us. He got quite close to Jon and a nip on the ankle was looming, then Jon shouted at him “Don’t bother with me dog, there’s no feeding on me!” Well the dog must of understood as he immediately pulled up and returned home. Well done Jon!

Committee Meeting Last Thursday we held our first committee meeting since the AGM. Highlights from the meeting as follows:

Christmas Turkey Race will be held on Sunday, 15th December. This will be a handicapped race, three laps of the league circuit. It is only open to Club members and there will be prizes for winners.

Christmas Party has been fixed for Friday, 20th November in Youghal GAA pavilion.

Triathlon Club. We are looking to progress the activity on setting up a triathlon section. Anyone interested is asked to contact Brian Sanders

Our weekend schedule is as follows - On Sundays at 10am we have a group that will roll out from Moby Dicks and cover a 30-50km route at a very comfortable pace for anyone looking to take up cycling. This group is typically led by Club Chairman Sean Lawlor.

Another group rolls out from Lidl at 10am on Saturday, 9am on Sunday and is led by Jim Wyse. This group does a really good job of introducing people to road and group cycling. They set various sportiffs and weekend training camps as targets. They work the group pace so as all will meet these various targets. At this time of year, they will cover 60-80km routes at an average speed of 25-27kph on fairly level routes. This is a brilliant group for those who want to improve their general cycling capability and enjoy the camaraderie of Club cycling!

Finally we have a group that also rolls out from Lidl at 9am on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Typically this group is made up of the more experienced Club cyclists. As with the other group their objective at this time of year is getting in the base miles for the coming season. Their spins are similar to the other group but just a couple of km faster. So for anyone feeling a little strong in the other groups, this is an ideal time of year to jump across.
