Youghal Cycling Club Notes – Sunday 8th April 2012

Sportiffs The Club League is kicking off this Thursday, 12th April 2012 for a 10 week series. The league will comprise of six road races, two time trials and two hill climbs. All events will be handicapped. First race starts from Summerfield Cross this Thursday at 7.00pm. Seeing as this is our first league in many years we are limiting it to Club members to iron out any teething problems. We do need some road marshals on the nights, so if you can lend a hand for about 1.5 – 2 hours please give Wayne a call on 086 380 6694. Kilmallock Hub Tour on Sunday, 15th April 2012. We will have a large crew going so please give us a call during the week to tie up on travel arrangements.

Racing Our racers had a week off, but they are back in action next weekend, in Carrick-On-Suir.

Club Spins A large group of 24 cyclists assembled at Moby Dicks at 9am on Sunday morning. As planned we split into two pelotons. Eleven riders went with Le Groupe Souffrance with the remaining thirteen riders rolling out with Le Groupe Agréable.

Le Groupe Souffrance headed east and up the Tallow Road. They were just getting into their stride when a massive pothole came out better off and left our peloton with three punctures to be repaired. It was noted though with some of the group that they were happy with the early stop as they had been burning a little with the high tempo and early Easter Bunny chocolate! Tyres repaired, we continued onto Tallow and took a left up the steady climb to Dungourney. On the fast descent we got another puncture and had to take another unscheduled break. As time was ticking by we skipped the coffee stop and continued on through Midleton and rolled back into Youghal with a handy 80km on the legs at an average rolling speed of 30kph.

Meanwhile Le Groupe Agréable headed west towards Redbarn Cross and onto Ballinacurra before rolling into Midleton for the tea stop. With plenty of banter about the groups ability to attack the various pinches along the route they re-fuelled and continued from Midleton to Dungourney, onto Killeagh and Mount Uniake before coming in the Quarry Road back to Youghal with 65km in the legs and a average rolling speed of 26.5kph.

Taking advantage of the fine Easter weather we also had groups head up The Vee on Good Friday and another group of 6 riders headed down to Kinsale and back via the coast route and Cobh ferry to complete a 160km round trip. Well done folks – keep ‘em turning!!

Finally, Le Group de Scone & Thé, assembled at Moby Dicks at 10am for a more leisurely spin. Concentrating on the more social points of cycling and looking forward to the Paris-Roubaix they headed towards Ardmore and took the steady climb to Kielys Cross. Here they crossed the N25 and took the long descent down by Mount Stuart and into Clashmore before rolling into town with a nice 60km on the legs.
