YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB NOTES 27th March 2011

Club Spin – 27th March

A foggy morning greated 26 members of Youghal C.C. last Sunday morning when we lined up at Moby Dicks for our weekly club spin. As happens every year, there was always a few who forgot about the hour but 16 of those who did remember, departed at 8.00am for Midleton with the final 10 departing at 10.00am for their weekly spin.

The first group of 16 were heading to Midleton to participate in a charity ride for the Christchurch Earthquake Aid Appeal ( New Zealand ) which was hosted by Midleton Wheelers. The Charity ride was to entail a 80Km loop around East Cork and West Waterford, but as we were getting in some training for the Mizen To Malin Tour, we decided to cycle up to the event, take part in the event and then ride home again afterwards. Suckers for punishment eh!!

We rolled well from Youghal to Killeagh on the surprisingly cold morning, and then as the sun broke through, onto Castlemartyr and Midleton to greet the other 200 odd cyclists taking part in the charity ride. Departing Midleton at 9.00am, the group rolled off at a swift enough pace which was held until Castlemartyr before things finally eased up. From there we slowly re-grouped the club and rode onto Killeagh and Youghal before climbing the bye pass. With the heart rates up, we dropped down to Rincrew roundabout and climbed the Tallow road with the gentle breeze on our backs. A good group had sat in with the Club by this stage and we dodged the usual potholes on our way to Tallow. Turning left in Tallow, we took the Midleton road and just started the accent when the KING OF PUNCTURES had to go at it again. “Puncharello” Fitzgerald made short work of his repair however and we were soon off again on the long climb to Dungourney. From there we continued up the final section of the BERG and rode a fast decent down into Midleton for the completion of the event. Completion for some maybe, but Youghal C.C. still had to cycle home, so a quick coffee was necked at the garage on the Mill road and we took off again for the road home in the ever increasing headwind. We all however rode steady as a group and arrived back in Youghal for 12.45 with a challenging 130km completed. Hats off to Mark and Greg who rode well all day with the group on their bling / bling machines. Please also note that the club will shortly be organizing a raffle in aid of the alarm clock appeal for the Club Secretary the man had made a special effort to remind everyone about the hour change on Saturday night only to forget himself. Nice one Doogle.

The second group of 10 also gathered at Moby Dicks last Sunday morning at 10.00am for their weekly run. They covered a sheltered route up the main Waterford road to the Shanachie before turning left and dropping like stones down into Clashmore for the coffee break. From there, they rode back through Piltown and home the main road to Youghal for 12.30pm with a nice 50km completed.

Ladies Spin

The female side to the club got the pedals turning again last Saturday when a group of three gathered at Moby Dicks for their weekly spin. Departing at 9.00am, they took the main road to Killeagh and back road to Mogeely and Castlemartyr where they braked for a coffee. The returned to Youghal again via Killeagh, completing a 25km spin. Keep it up Girls !! and more of the same next week.

Birthday Wishes

A very happy 30th Birthday to the man celebrating his golden Birthday this week, Mr. Liam McLellan, from all at the club. We hope to see you soon on a lovely new green bike, pacing the group with Bulman up the VEE.

Midweek Spins.

A number of club members have been hitting the road during the week to get in some extra kms on the bike for the upcoming Mizen to Malin challenge. Spins are usually organized through the clubs Facebook page so anyone interested in going out should keep an eye on the clubs Facebook page for details. Alternatively you could just keep an eye out for John Bulman as he seems to out on the bike every day !!
