YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB NOTES 16th January 2011

2011 training begins - 16th January

Our first serious training spin of the year took place last Sunday when a group of 15 gathered at Moby Dicks at 9.00am sharp for a trip around the East coast of Cork. Out the N25 we headed where we turned down the Bog Road for Ballymacoda. From Ballymacoda we climbed over to Garryvoe and rolled on to Shanagarry before turning left fro a loop around Ballycotton and the lumpy road along the coast. Rolling up a down, we eventually dropped down into Cloyne and continued on from there to Saleen and the spectacular loop around East Ferry. Not so spectacular for some as they were chewing the handle bars with the swift pace to the coffee stop at Midleton Roundabout Garage. A welcome break and cup of coffee was enjoyed before we set off again for the main road back to Youghal. After a slight delay with a puncture, we got going again and cruised back to Youghal via Castlemartyr and Killeagh. Upon arrival in Youghal, it kicked off again as we hit the bottom of the bye pass. As was so aptly put on Face book, “what happens to everyone when we hit the bye-pass? Is it compulsory to leave our brains at the bottom, It must be with the amount of attacking that goes on!” Any, climb complete, we regrouped and rolled back through town at 12.30 with a lumpy 80km spin completed. A great training run for this summers Malin to Mizen Head challenge.

Weekend Spins.

As you are all well aware by now, there is a weekly spin every Sunday morning at 9.00 am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub by the Clock Gate. This spin which runs on various routes every week usually takes between 3 to 4 hours ( weather permitting ) and covers on average between 60 to 80km. The pace is comfortable and we usually stop half way around for a coffee or tea.

A second group also departs at 9.00am for a 3 - 4 hour spin, and covers a 50 to 70km distance at a slightly slower pace for those wishing to make the transition from the third group to the first group.

A third group also goes on a weekly spin every Sunday morning at 10.00am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub by the Clock Gate. This spin which runs on various routes every week usually takes around 3 hours to complete and covers on average between 30 to 40km. The pace is again very comfortable. This is an ideal group for anyone interested in taking up the sport.
