YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB NOTES 21st August 2011

WEEKLY CLUB SPIN – Sunday 21st August 2011

The An Post Sean Kelly Tour Of Waterford will take place next Sunday the 28th and the clubs training was duly stepped up a gear last Sunday when a group of 12 gathered at Moby Dicks for an 8.00am depart. With the Kelly in mind, the chosen route was to west Waterford where we would take in some of the Kelly Tour as a tester fro the following Sunday. From Youghal we traveled to Clashmore, Aglish, The Welcome Inn, Inch, Ballymacarbry and the first real test of day over the climb of ‘Powers The Pot’. Paddy led from the front and pulled the group all the way to the top. When one certain individual tried to pass Paddy out to be the first to the top of the ’HILL’, he was swiftly pulled back by Paddy who put him in his place ! Fun over, we descended hard and rolled along to Rathgormac for a cup of Tea only to find none. Kenneally wasn’t too happy without the tea but like the rest, had some Mi-Wadi for fuel and off we rolled again. Dropping down to the Carrick – Lemi-Brien road, we turned right for Lemi-Brien and rolled hard into the headwind through Lemi-Brien and onto Dungarvan. As some were feeling fresh, the Captain decided to take us the accent of ‘Strikes Hill’ (for a bit of training !!). Paddy again controlled the group on the climb which was taken at as good as pace and ever done. Climb completed, we dropped down to Clashmore and took the back road home via Tinock. We did call to see Tony & Ina but no one was home. Dropping down to Youghal Bridge, we spun out the legs as we arrived back in County Cork, gave what was left to give over the Bye-Pass and completed the 135km spin at 1.15pm. A great work out for the following weeks Tour !!.

RAY LOONEY TROPHY – Saturday 20th August 2011

Blarney Cycling Club re-launched the famous Ray Looney Cycling Trophy last week. This trophy is steeped in history and was fought for over a super-criterium-circuit on Saturday evening last. The circuit was run over the Hedge Road – Bottlebank – Forrest Lodge circuit. As predicted Paudi “rocket” O'Brien and Edward Barry made the race where over 70 riders took to the gun and only 30 managed to finish where an average speed of over 48km/h was clocked. Youghal’s speed demon, Eoin Whyte, took to the line against a strong A1 group and rode well over the lightening fast course. As tradition goes, he had he goes off the front but nothing stuck and did very well for an A3 to finish safely within the final group. A good speed training ride for Eoin that will surly stand to him for the final few races ahead.

SPOKES TRIATHLON TRAMORE – Saturday 20th August 2011.

Chris Mintern & Brain Sanders traveled to Tramore last Saturday to take part in the annual Spokes Triathlon Tramore 2011 and what a day they had with Chris taking the overall win and Brain recovering well from a technical problem at the star to finish in the top 20. Well done to both, more news on the results will follow next week.

THE AN POST SEAN KELLY TOUR OF WATERFORD – Sunday 28th August 2011

The An Post Sean Kelly Tour Of Waterford will take place next Sunday the 28th and a large group form the Youghal Club will travel to the event to take part in either the 160km event or the 90km event. This is usually the largest Sportive Event in Ireland and a great event to aim for from the start on the year. Sign on will take place on the preceding Saturday with the club looking to depart in convoy from Youghal Bridge on the Sunday morning. Keep an eye on the Clubs Facebook page for travel details !

As a result of this event there will most likely no official club spin on Thursday night or Sunday morning.
