YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB NOTES 13th June 2010

Mahon Falls, 13th June 2010

Another mountainous spin was planned for our Sunday morning spin last weekend when a group of 10 gathered at Moby Dicks at 8.00am for our grand depart. The plan for the day was to tackle the uncategorized climb of Mahon Falls. We struck off out the Waterford Road to Dungarvan and climbed well as a group with a strong wind blowing from the North West. It wasn’t long before we were dropping down into Dungarvan when disaster struck for the hamster. He had a lucky escape when his tyre had warped on the decent but he showed his talented bike handling skills to control the bike and bring it to a stop. There are easier ways of getting out of climbing Mahon Falls John !!. Re-grouped, we struck off again and rode on through Dungarvan before climbing up the Pike and rolling onto Lemybrien. From their we made our way out the Carrick On Suir Road and prepared ourselves for the climb of the day. Turning left of the Carrick Road, we were straight into the climb with an outrageous gale of wind blowing into our faces which resulted in the group being blown apart. Everyone however put their head down and got into their rhythm for the climb and 20 minutes later we were all at the top admiring the scenic view. A quick drop down the other side and a token puncture for little Schleck saw us rolling along at a steady pace back to Dungarvan where we stopped at the Kilrush Garage for our scheduled coffee stop. Suitably Refueled and ready for road, we took off again for Youghal. With the wind getting stronger by the minute, we climbed the old sweep up to the Shanacie and put the heads down again into the headwind for the road home. All gritting their handle bars, we rolled back the main road to Youghal where we emptied out our tanks on the Bye-Pass. We arrived home to Youghal for around 12.30 pm with a challenging 120km route completed.

The 10 O’ Clock group consisting of 5 riders also gathered on the good morning. The riders departed and also traveled out the Waterford Road to Dungarvan before turning down for Piltown and Ardmore. From their they climbed out of Ardmore and turned right down into Ring before climbing back up the climb to the Shanacie for their coffee stop. Filled up with Tea, they also rode the main road back to Youghal against the strong headwind and arrived back in Youghal for around 13.15 with another challenging 65km completed for those who participated.

John Drumm Cup, Currow, Co. Kerry.

I said it a few weeks ago and I will say it again, Eoin Whyte has pinned on the race number and it will only be a matter of time before he gets his first win. Last Sunday however, almost made it onto his pal mares when he had a fantastic ride down in Kerry. Eoin was piped on the line for the win over a mountainous circuit. A beak of 4 had gone early in the race before Eoin and another rider bridged across to make it a group of six. The six rode well together for the day and on the last climb of the day, Eoin jumped and split the breakaway into pieces. He crested the top of the climb on his own and was looking good for the win but was caught on the decent by another rider who piped Eoin on the line for the win. Still, 2nd place was not to be sniffed at. Great ride Eoin and well done from all at the club. We are looking forward to Cobh next Sunday Eoin, I KNOW YOU ARE.
