Youghal Cycling Club Notes – Sunday 30th July 2012

Sportiffs Next up in the sportiff calendar is “The Vee Challenge”, as hosted by Youghal Cycling Club, on Sunday August 12th. This is our annual tour and it has a 130km and 90km route to challenge cyclists of all levels. This is the third year that we have held the event and this year we have changed around the 130km route to include the challenging climb from Newcastle to Cappaquin via Mt Mellary. This year we are holding the event to fundraise money for local visually impaired athlete Amanda Crotty. Amanda has been involved in running since a very early age and never let her vision impairment distract her from her love of running. Earlier this year she achieved an Olympic qualification time, but unfortunately the Irish Paralympic Team are not entering in her discipline, so she is not London bound. Her training will continue though as she also has the World Championships to prepare for next year and her expenses continue to accumulate on a monthly basis. On-line entry for the event is currently open. All those who enter on-line will get a E5 discount, further details on how to enter are available on our web and facebook sites.

Club Spins Club spins are at peak activity at the moment with large numbers turning out on a regular basis. Last Sunday our 8am group headed off and rode the new 130km Vee Challenge route. Feedback was positive with all riders tested as they “enjoyed” the various Cat 2, 3 & 4 climbs. Special mentions must go to Dave who joined us from Scotland for the day and had his first climb of the Vee, well done Dave and we are looking forward to having you back on August 12th! Well done also to league supremo Tony Walsh, the ever complaining Paddy Corkery and the ever suffering Mark O’Riordan on their first climbs up to Mt Mellary – well rode lads! As we rolled out of Cappaquin we met the 9am group on their morning spin around West Waterford also, they were led out by the powerhouse of Jon Flynn as he is recovering from a recent leg injury. Jon, they way you passed us you look well recovered!! On the mend also is Club chair Sean Lawlor after his recent spill on the Ring of Kerry. Rumour has it that he jumped rather than fell so as he could get back to the Danny Mann for a few sociables! The question on all our lips for the weekend was “Where is John Healy?” If anyone has information please contact the club. Also note that with The Vee Challenge on in the coming weeks, the club spins are re-focussing on group cycling. Anyone in training that has not been out on the scheduled spins are encouraged to come along as pace will be controlled in line with group abilities.
