Youghal Cycling Club Notes – Sunday 24th June 2012

Summer League Last Thursday, 20th June 2012 we held the final night of our Handicapped Summer League. Over the past 10 weeks we have had 38 riders turn up on the Thursday evenings to compete in the 6 road races, 2 hill climbs and 2 time trials. On the final week we were doing the 40km road race circuit around the Gortaroo circuit. As usual the groups were seeded and sent off at various times. In contention for the overall prize were Tony Walsh, John Treacy and Cillian Keneally. With 5 laps of the circuit to complete the race, it was flat out racing, for just under the hour. Coming up the Redbarn Road we had in excess of 20 riders out of the saddle sprinting for the finish. It was Christy McCarthy that was first over the line this week, followed by Ronan Coleman and Ina Walsh. In the overall league Tony Walsh maintained his lead and won the league, followed by John Treacy in second and Cillian Keneally in third place. The Club are delighted with the success of the league and have some other ideas to keep the momentum going. These will be announced over the coming weeks. We would also like to thank all those who helped with running the event and in particular our main sponsors – The Village Greengrocer, Castlemartyr and O’Mahoney Cycles, Dungarvan.

Sportiffs Last weekend we had a group of riders head to the West to compete in the Tour De Burren. This is a tough 162km spin in and around the roads of Connemara. With a strong south westerly wind and driving rain, it was going to be a tough day for all. 7 hours later they rolled back into Ballyvaughan with the route complete. Well done to Ronan Coleman who did his first 160km, you picked a tough one in tough conditions! Next up on the sportiff calendar is the Ring of Kerry on Saturday July 7th, 2012. Again we have a large group going down, see you on one of the regular club spins for further details.

Club Criterium Road Race It is many years since the Club last a criterium, with the recent upswing in popularity in cycling we have decided to run the event again this year. It is scheduled for Friday evening, 6th July 2012. The format of the event is a one hour race around the streets of Youghal. As riders are lapped they are retired from the race by the officials. Once the hour is up all riders then continue for a further three laps where the first over the line is the winner. Throughout the hour there are also spot prizes to keep thing exciting. The streets will be closed to traffic during the event. Further details will be made available to residents in the coming days.
