Youghal Cycling Club Notes – Sunday 2nd September 2012

Sportiffs Last week saw a large group from Youghal Cycling Club head to Dungarvan to participate in the Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford cycling series. Up first on Saturday was the ever popular 12km family cycle. With families coming from all corners of the provence, there was in excess of 2k cyclists take to the family friendly cycle paths around Dungarvan. Well done to all the budding cyclists out there who entered! On the Sunday it was down to the serious stuff as we had groups enter in the 100km and 160km routes. This year the 100km route travelled the coast road by Ring to up to Ardmore before heading into Knockanore and back to Dungarvan. This had our West Waterford gang all signed up for the 100km route. The reports back have it that they had a great spin, they were 1st to the food stop in Knockanore and last to leave, well done lads! Meanwhile the other group of sufferlandians were gathering at the Dungarvan sports center to embark on the 160km route. This year the route slightly changed as the Seskin Hill climb in Carrick-On-Suir was taken out and replaced by the Tinnock Climb outside Clonmel. This had the group giddy as the new climb had only been previously seen on youtube clips. The Youghal crew were made of stiffer stuff and tackled the climb with confidence and then took in Powers the Pot, before the mighty Mahon Falls and Mamas before rolling into Dungarvan with 165km on the legs in just over 6 hours cycling time. Big congratulations must be given to all the riders who competed their fist Kelly Tour. Let me tell you folks, it does not get any easier, but the stories get better every year!!

The last big tour of the cycling season is the Rebel Tour. This year sees the tour move to Glengariff. There will be a 10km family route, and 55km, 85km and 160km adult routes. As it is the last major sportiff of the season there is a large group from the club planning to head down to participate. Keep a close eye on the facebook page for further details.
