YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB NOTES 24th October 2010

THE SUNDAY SPIN - Sunday 24th October

Normal service resumed last Sunday morning with the steady winter training now underway. A group of 10 gathered as always at Moby Dicks for 9.00am and departed up the Tallow Road to try and get warmed up on the fresh morning. Climb complete, we dropped down into Tallow before climbing back out of it again towards Lismore. Cruising on the good road through Lismore, we then rode onto Cappoquin for the Coffee stop and weekly banter session. Re-fuelled and warmed up, we rolled through Dromina Drive, Villarstown and Aglish before flying through Clashmore and back onto the main road for home. We arrived back in Youghal for 12.15pm and the usual sprint up the bye-pass. 65km completed on the very enjoyable sunny day.

The second group of 11 also gathered at Moby Dicks for 10.00am to take on a club favorite route down to Garryvoe. Departing down the bog road for Ballymacoda, they rode from there over the climbs to Garryvoe and then onto Ladysbridge for the coffee. Warmed up, they rode on to Castlemartyr and Killeagh before arriving back in Youghal for 12.30 with a comfortable 40km completed again on such a good day.

KEITH PHELAN FUNDRAISING CYCLE - Sunday 17th October

On Sunday the 17th, Youghal C.C. participated in a fundraising cycle in aid of local lad, Keith Phelan. The Phelan family, from Raheen Park, Youghal, has launched a campaign to raise funds to send their 11 year old son, Keith, who suffers from Cerebral Palsy, for an operation in Germany, in the hope that it will improve their son’s quality of life.

A healthy peleton of 58 gathered at Moby Dicks on a fine morning to participate in the fundraising cycle. Photo shoot complete, we departed at 10.00am and headed out the main road to Killeagh at a very relaxing pace that suited all based on the volume of conversations that were taking place. From Killeagh we rode on to Castlemartyr where we stopped at The Village Greengrocer’s for a fantastic spread of refreshments kindly sponsored by The Village Greengrocer. Suitably refueled, the peleton re-grouped and returned to Youghal again via Killeagh at an equally comfortable pace to the outward journey. We arrived back in Youghal for 12.30pm with an enjoyable 35km completed for a very worthy cause. Thanks to all the club members and friends who participated in the event with the good attendance on the day resulting in a substantial sum of money being raised for Keith’s campaign.

From all at the Club Keith, we wish you the best of luck with the rest of your fundraising campaign and more importantly in your future operation which we hope will be of a great success.

A special thanks to all that helped out on the day and in particular to The Village Greengrocer, Castlemartyr, who on the day kindly provided their facilities and sponsored all the delicious refreshments for all those who participated in the cycle. Thank you from all at the Club for your continued support throughout the many events that the club has participated in this year.
