CLUB NOTES

Its official, Youghal Cycling Club is going to have to change its name to Team Trek because the amount of Treks on show last Sunday was just out of order, especially with the two new O’ Mahoney’s Trek’s. In Total, four new bikes have appeared in the peleton in the last four weeks and three of them have been Trek’s. That brings the total of Trek’s on show last Sunday to nine out of the group of 16 who gathered at Moby Dicks at 9.00am for our usual Sunday morning spin.

With the name change agreed, we headed out the main road to Killeagh and Mogeely before turning left up the climb for Dungourney. From there we rode a testing, rolling road to Castlelyons before turning back the road for Conna and Tallow. Before Tallow however the usual suspects were again at it as they wound it up and jumped like frogs in an effort to be the Coffee Stop Champion. As always, it was the secretary who started it off followed by the two new Trek’s, Little Schleck, The Hamster, myself of course and the Boy Terry. One by one they blew before Little Schleck got the gap needed. The Secretary tried to bridge across but had nothing left in the tank after his sneaky training in the big ring last Friday, so it was left to myself who made it across to Little Schleck as we entered Tallow. Little Schleck took the plaudits as we stopped for the Coffee. While we refueled we watched with amazement as every person in Tallow seemed to come out of the Woodwork to welcome back their Tallowban Champion, Sir Tobin. When we finally managed to drag him away from the crowds, he took off up the Youghal road like a man looking to flee for his life, he made such a burst that only the hamster managed to catch up to him. The rest of the group grinded our way up the hill and dropped back down into Youghal for around 12.00pm. Those with anything left in the legs went up over the bypass, the remainder rolled home but of course there is always one man looking to go the extra mile !. A certain Bulman was spotted riding with his head down and in the big ring just outside Killeagh. Some fella’s just can’t get enough. Good weather was had for the days challenging spin of 75km which was enjoyed by all. I however have been banned from planning any more Sunday Routes, so a challenge to you all out their, who can plan the best 70 to 80km Sunday Spin ? We shall wait and see !!

The 10 O’ Clock group consisting of 6 riders ( included the grand return of the Young McCarthy )also gathered on the good morning and traveled out the main road to Dungarvan. They rode the long drag up to the Shanachie before turning left and back past the mast before dropping down into Aglish and home to Youghal through Clashmore & Piltown. Another challenging 40km completed for those who participated.
