Club Notes - Sunday, 6th November, 2011

Sweet Youghal Bay was basking in the November sunshine as the peleton of 18 cyclists left from Moby Dicks at 9am. The route this week was to take us east into Waterford for an early climb up the Tallow Road. The pace was steady but the breaths were deep as we drew in the cool November air. Rolling down into Tallow we took a left for Conna, on towards Rathcormac, before turning left and passing through Lisgoold. With about 60km on the legs we pulled into Midleton for the tea stop. Some of us must have been very thirsty as there was a mighty bust of speed as Hill and Collins went for the green jersey with a 500m sprint. They were too fast as our resident paparazzi as he was unable to keep pace for the photo finish. We downed a quick Espresso and Jelly Babies before jumping back on the bikes for the ride home. The pace was steady and the craic was good as we rolled in the Killeagh Road and onto Youghal with a nice 90km on the legs at an average of 26kph. We would also like to say welcome and well done to Dave Heffernan and Denis who came out for their first (of many!) Club spins this week. Take note folks – this is the time of year when we ease off on the pace and distance, the focus is more on the leisure side of cycling. So if you are interested in taking up cycling just come to one of our scheduled spins below. Photos can be seen on our facebook site.

Meanwhile at 10am our second group of the day left from Moby Dicks. The nine riders were rearing to go but first the usual argy-bargy of “Are we going west Waterford or east Cork?” After counting the hills of west Waterford is was agreed to go east Cork and get as flat a route as possible. Off we set out the main road and left down the bog road to Ladysbridge, straight through up and along the rolling road where there was a period of silence until we turned right before Ballymacoda, headed for Ballinacurra and on to the garage for coffee. Of course the two golden oldies had to have a blueberry muffin each and there was agreement that they were gaining weight on these Sunday spins. Everybody refreshed we were back on the main road to back to Youghal. Some of the riders had Sunday lunch commitments and rode away at the Two Mile Inn leaving the rest to make it home at a slower pace. It was not to be as just outside Castlemartyr the 9am group came on the stragglers and dropped their pace to allow us get on and we were towed along all the way home. Unfortunately these the two golden oldies failed the test to move up and will meet again at 10am next week!

Midweek we had nobody go out on Wednesday due to the torrential rain. But on Thursday night we had 6 cyclists do 46km of town circuits, Saturday there were 8 cyclists do a 70km west Waterford spin. Our road Captain was out on a few other occasions as well, he is available for hire, and promises to complain throughout the entire route.
