YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB NOTES 14th MAY 2012

by Youghal Cycling Club on Sunday, May 13, 2012 at 8:21pm ·

What a very busy weekend it was for Youghal CC last week with some club members racing in Whitchurch, others cruising around the Tour De Cure and the early birds busting a windy gut around East Cork. With the current PRO working very hard in Boston and even harder in Las Vegas, the mantle has been left to the former PRO to keep the public up to date on the Clubs most recent activities. Oh ya, and time for some payback also!!

Summer League Week 5

Round 5 of the clubs summer league took place last Thursday night with the first of this years Time Trial’s or what most call ‘the race of truth’. The parcours for this event was a 10km straight and flat route from Killeagh to Youghal. As usual, the handy caps were applied to each riders time but no matter as it was a flat out, as fast as you can cycle for each of the 24 participants. This weeks winner was the up and coming and in form Paddy Keating who produced the ride of the night to stand atop the winners step. He was followed by the not so in form John Healy and the power house Ger Flanagan. Well done to all who participated on the night and particularly to our time keepers and marshals who as always done a great job. For those who don’t know, our main time keeper that night, John Bulman, was spotted doing the same time trial the following morning so be sure to ask him how he got on when you see him.

Overall, after 5 weeks racing, Tony Walsh leads the points closely followed by John Tracey and our only underage competitor, Cillian Kenneally.

O'Leary & O'Keeffe Memorial Race – Whitchurch, Co. Cork.

Our usual two racing horses of Brian Sanders and Eoin Whyte headed to Whitchurch last Sunday to dish out some more pain on the racing circuit. Joining them for the first time in a long time were Gregg Hill and Dave Heffernan who pinned on their racing numbers in the A4 race. Both Gregg and Dave rode very comfortably all day in the race. Gregg gave it a go on the second last lap only to be caught before the last lap and the wily Dave stayed near the front all day and at the end he was well up their for the sprint. Both finished well up in the main peloton at the end. Brian and Eoin lined out in the A3 race and it was Eoin who made the main break of the day. At the finish, Eoin was unsuccessful in getting away from the main breakaway but still finished a fine 8th place. Brian again finished strong as he led home the main group not long after the winners. Well done to ye all lads on another good showing for Youghal CC. Pity Jason was away at a wedding on foreign soil as he may have made a big difference in the race with two team mates around him.

Stephen Roche Tour De Cure 2012.

A comfortable group of 10 members of Youghal CC traveled to Midleton last Sunday for the annual Stephen Roche Tour De Cure hosted by Midleton CC. 7 riders lined out for the 160km sportive with the other 3 riding the 100km sportive. Strong winds on the day made both routes very challenging but all members finished well on the sunny days cycling. Hats off to Tom Hickey who finished his first ever 160km on a bike and well done to all the club members who participated as a good steady pace was kept for the day, which made it a very enjoyable sportive cycle. Well done also to Midleton CC and all those who organized the event which as usual was very well run and the riders were very well looked after.

Weekly Sunday Spin

For the 6 early birds who were unable to attend the Tour De Cure, an 8.00am depart from Youghal saw them travel to Ballymacoda, Ballycotton, Trabolgan, Whitegate, East Ferry, Cloyne, Killeagh, Mt Uniacke, Tallow Road and Home for 12.00 with a brisk 110km completed. No complaints here though about the wind or the route for the day!!

It will all be back to normal this week, with spins leaving from Moby Dicks at 7 on Tuesday evening, Round 6 of the Summer League at 6.30 on Thursday evening from Summerfield cross, Saturday spin at 10.00am from Lidl and Sunday morning spins now all leaving at 8.00am from Moby’s with the exception of the 10.00am group. Summer is coming and its time to start getting them steady miles in BOYS & GIRLS!!

Until next week, safe cycling!
