YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB NOTES 8th August 2010

THE VEE CHALLENGE – Sunday 8th August 2010

Youghal C.C. hosted its annual Club Tour last Sunday in aid of Irish Guide Dogs for the blind ( Youghal Branch ). A fine sunny morning greated the 100 Cyclists who departed from the Aura Leisure Centre at 10.00am.

The first group participated in ‘ The Vee Challenge’ a 130km Route which departed from Youghal and traveled on to Tallow and Lismore before taking in the ascent of the Vee from Lismore and descending into Clogheen before climbing the Vee again up through the wood's, then heading for the food stop on the road to Cappoquin at the Cats Bar. Refueled the route traveled down to Cappoquin and then passed by the Blackwater taking in the beautiful Dromana drive, Villarstown, Aglish, Clashmore and Piltown before heading for the coast and the final sting in the tail around Monatray which offered

spectacular views of Youghal town. The first of this group arrived back at 3.15 pm, very satisfied with their spin.

The second group participated in ‘The Vee Ascent’ a 90km Route which also departed from Youghal.

This route covered most of the roads that the Vee Challenge incorporated with the participants climbing the Vee as far as Glenaknockaun before turning back right for Mellary and heading for the food stop on the road to Cappoquin at the Cats Bar. Refueled this group also traveled down to Cappoquin and then passed by the Blackwater taking in the beautiful Dromana drive, Villarstown, Aglish, Clashmore and Piltown before diverting back onto the main road and home to Youghal. The first of this group arrived back at 3.00 pm and were also very satisfied with their spin.

With the two groups returning between 3 and 4 pm, an enjoyable picnic / feed and cup of coffee was appreciated by all after their challenging spins which all took place in aid of a very worthy cause.

The club would like to give special thanks to all the people who helped to organize and run the event on the day and in particular to the following parties:

- The Village Greengrocer, Castlemartyr for all the sponsored food and water.

- Aura Leisure Centre, Youghal for the use of their facilities.

- The Cats Bar, Mellary, Cappoquin for the Tea, Coffee and the use of their facilities.

- Cara Ambulance Services for the sponsorship of the Medical / Emergency Services.

- Galvins Costcuters, Youghal for the sponsored water.

- The Club Members Wife’s and Partner’s for all the sandwiches.

- The Irish Guide Dogs for the blind ( Youghal Branch ) for the sponsored water and sandwiches.

- An Garda Siochana for their roll out through town.

- All Marshalls and Support Vehicles.

There was a fantastic turnout on the day from most of the cycling clubs in the area as well as some from West Cork, Waterford, Limerick, Dublin, Northern Ireland and all the way from Newcastle in England. Thanks very much too all that participated and we hope to see ye all for a bigger and longer Tour next year. Photos of this year’s event can now be seen on our club website ( address below ).

Best wishes to young Elliot who didn’t like the taste of water on the day of the event and also to one of the elder statesman of the club, Seanie Lawler, who while out doing some sneaky training decided to a have a wee drink in the Shanachie last week and duly took a tumble shortly after. I wonder what sometimes goes on in the club with the young fella's not drinking enough of the right stuff while on the bike and the old fella’s drinking too much of the wrong stuff while on the bike. Does it really matter what they drink ? their all falling off anyway !!!!!!!!!.
