YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB NOTES 27th June 2010

BRING ON THE RING – Sunday 27th June 2010

With the Ring of Kerry Looming this weekend, a challenging spin was planned for the group last Sunday as warm up for this weekend. A group of 12 gathered at Moby Dicks at 8.00am for our grand depart. All suitably kitted out in the new club kit, we rode out the main Cork road to Killeagh, turned right for Mogeely and then climbed up to Dungourney with the wind behind us. From there we rolled along the bumpy route to Castlelyons before climbing up the 15% gradient to Fermoy where we stopped for the coffee. Refueled and all feeling good, we took off again for Ballyduff and followed the Blackwater to Lismore and Cappoquin before turning right for Dromina Drive and Villarstown. Turning into the strong wind, we put the head down and rode on to Aglish and Clashmore, under the main road to Piltown and back into to Youghal to hit a wall of wind as we climbed up the bye-pass. Well spent at this stage, we dropped down the new line and back into town for 12.30 pm with a challenging 120km route completed. All were happy with their spin and felt good throughout so it was good to know that the form is coming for all this weekend in Kerry. BRING IT ON BABY !!!

IRONMAN NICE 2010

Congratulations to Local Youghal IRONMEN, Tom Curran and Connor Coleman, who last Sunday completed an International Ironman event in Nice France. Think Cote d'Azur, the French Riviera. Twenty kilometers to one side is Monaco; just a little further going the other way to the Film Festival in Cannes. The Cote D'Azur (the French Riviera) is renowned for its beaches or more likely for the scantily clad beach goers. The swim follows the rich tradition long distance racing here in Nice. The bike course for the Ironman France is, simply put, like no other. It's unforgettable, sensational, scenic, hilly and arguably one of the greatest Ironman challenges.

This weekend, a large group of club members will be heading for Killarney for our first big objective of the season. Most of the group will be heading down on Friday afternoon with the remaining heading down on the Saturday morning on the spin. Anyone traveling is asked to contact Club Secretary Jonathan at 086-8563292 to arrange times and traveling arrangements, more importantly, what pub we will be meeting in on the Friday night. Let’s hope the weather will be kinder to us than the last two years.

Midweek Spins.

The midweek spins have now commenced until the end of the summer with the group gathering as usual at Moby Dicks for a 7.00pm sharp starting time. Spins will take place every Tuesday & Thursday night and will normally last for 2hrs per spin ( weather permitting ). These spins are generally of a high tempo and are idle for anyone looking to get the heart rate up a little and bring on their fitness level.

Weekend Spins.

As you are all well aware by now, there is a weekly spin every Sunday morning at 8.00 am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub by the Clock Gate. This spin which runs on various routes every week usually takes between 4 to 5 hours ( weather permitting ) and covers on average between 80 to 120km ( 55 to 75 miles ). The pace is comfortable and we usually stop half way around for a coffee or tea.

A second group also goes on a weekly spin every Sunday morning at 10.00am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub by the Clock Gate. This spin which runs on various routes every week usually takes around 2 hours to complete and covers on average between 50 to 60km ( 35 to 45 miles ). The pace is again very comfortable. This is an idle group for anyone interested in taking up the sport.

New members or visitors to the area are always welcome. If you have any questions about the club or attending one of our weekend spins, please contact our Club Secretary Jonathan at 086-8563292 for details. See you all Sunday Morning !!. Until next week, safe cycling !!.

The four laps of the marathon will most likely quickly drown out the pain of the bike leg, the scenery beach side casting a spell on many competitors. Then there are the sights, sounds and tourism of the famed seafront. The finish, with its pageantry, fireworks and expected huge crowds will be located at the Promenade des Anglais (avenue de Verdun) opposite the Hotel Meridien. They were suitably kitted out in the new club gear for this mammoth task of a 2.4 mile ( 4km ) swim followed by a 112 mile ( 160km ) cycle and finishing it off with 26.2 mile ( 40km ) marathon. Both of the lads completed the event together in an amazing 12 hrs 7 53 minutes. Fantastic time lads. Well done from all at the club.
