Youghal Cycling Club Notes – Sunday 11th March 2012

A busy weekend for Youghal Cycling Club. This weekend saw the racers head off for their second outing of the year. This week it was to Limerick to compete in their annual race. Up this week we had Eoin Whyte and Brian Sanders battling it out in the 95km A3 race. Both riders did very well and kept with the main bunch. Coming up to the last 15km Eoin was battling hard with the lead bunch and doing a lot of work out front which paid off as he was delighted to come in 9th position with Brian Sanders rolling in at 15th position. A little more cuteness in the next race could see them come in a few more positions up – well done lads! Also racing in Limerick was Jason Collins in the 62km A4 circuit. This was Jason’s first outing this year and he worked hard all day to keep with the pace. His legs got a good burn and this will stand to him as he takes up his mammoth 800km charity cycle from Dinard, France to Lourdes in aid of The Irish Pilgrimage Trust over Easter. Best of luck Jason!

Sportiffs – As the cycling is kicking off we are currently preparing for The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Cycle. This is being hosted by Midleton Wheelers and is a 90km cycle on Sunday, March 25th. This event is a great introduction to sportiffs for the new members to the club and highly recommended. After that we have the Kilmallock Cycling Club Hub Tour on Sunday, April 15th. This is a great tour, 130km long with some good climbs, great scenery and plenty of craic. Highly recommended!!

Midweek spins have resumed on Tuesday & Thursday evenings. We leave Lidl carpark at 7.30pm sharp for a high tempo 60-90 minute spin. Don’t worry about getting dropped as we loop back from the top of the climbs to pick up everyone. This is great training for the coming season.

Weekly Club Spin – A healthy group of 12 riders assembled at Moby Dicks for the weekly Club spin. This week we headed East and took the familiar climb up the Tallow Road. Forty minutes later we had rolled through Tallow and were looking for something different, we skipped the sweep and took a left at Tallow Bridge, and climbed up by Lisfinny Castle, onto Coolowen where we regrouped and caught our breath.

From here we continued on to Ballyduff and into Fermoy for the coffee stop. Nicely refuelled we re-mounted and took the direct route back to Youghal via Tallow. Highlights of the day included having Jon Flynn back in the saddle, he stuck with it all day and was like a guy who never missed a week, well aside from all his groaning and complaining that is. The two Paddies also dug deep and spins like this will stand to them big time over the coming months. Jon Tobin took the polkadot jersey this week on the climb to Coolowen with a great sprint to the top! We thought Anthony Keneally was suffering coming out of Tallow on the way home, but he caught a second wind on the sprint home and picked up the green jersey. Johnny Bulman holds overall yellow, but skipped the bypass this week, any more of this malarkey and he will put under pressure by the chasing John Healy.

St Patrick’s Day Parade – The Club will be walking in the annual St Patrick Day Parade again this year. Members are asked to bring their bikes and wear the Club Jersey.

Schedule as follows (weather dependent):

Tuesday & Thursday at 10am from Lidl Carpark – Intermediate Cycling
