YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB NOTES 30th January 2011

Club Spin – 30th January

Only the hard members were on show for Youghal C.C. last Sunday morning when a group of 10 departed Town at 9.00am with the temperature gauge reading -4. Although the roads looked dry and there was little frost to be seen, a freezing light wind was blowing and was keeping everyone on a bike that day pretty chilly. To try and warm up it was decided to head down by Glendine and take the climb up to Knockanore in attempt to warm the bodies. All was going well at the top of the climb until the Event Organizer got a puncture before Knockanore and we all froze again for the half an hour it took him to repair it ( we will have to organize a puncture repair day for you bud !! ). We got going again and it wasn’t long before we were dropping down from Knockanore to Camp Fire Bridge. Little chat took place on the decent as a biting wind blow into our faces. At the bottom the temperature gauge was reading -15 and boy god did we know it. It got so cold in fact that all 20 bottles of the various drinks we had froze on the decent from Knockanore. In fact, it was definitely the coldest spin that this scribe has been on in over 20 years. With everyone getting extremely cold and thirsty, the pace was upped to a high tempo from Campfire Bridge to Cappoquin, Lismore and Tallow where we stopped for a very welcoming hot cup of coffee as well as some hot water for our bottles which were still frozen. As usual, the secretary couldn’t wait to get out of there ( why is that John ?) so we quickly moved on out the Conna road and struck a left at Curraghaglass for the long climb up to the top of the Tallow / Midleton road. From there we rode steady to Dungourney and dropped down into Mogeely on the good stretch of road. All going well at this stage, we upped the tempo again for the run back to Youghal via Killeagh. Youghal reached and the usual ascent of the by-pass was all going well as a group until that Tallow Ban man again kicked it all off for a free for all climb. Climb complete we all went home our separate ways at 12.45pm with a very difficult and very cold 90km completed.

lock group also braved the cold when a group of six took in a spin around East Cork Coast beforhome again for 12.15pm with a chilly 50km completed

Weekend Spins.

As you are all well aware by now, there is a weekly spin every Sunday morning at 9.00 am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub by the Clock Gate. This spin which runs on various routes every week usually takes between 3 to 4 hours ( weather permitting ) and covers on average between 60 to 80km. The pace is comfortable and we usually stop half way around for a coffee or tea.

A second group also departs at 9.00am for a 3 - 4 hour spin, and covers a 50 to 70km distance at a slightly slower pace for those wishing to make the transition from the third group to the first group.

A third group also goes on a weekly spin every Sunday morning at 10.00am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub by the Clock Gate. This spin which runs on various routes every week usually takes around 3 hours to complete and covers on average between 30 to 40km. The pace is again very comfortable.
