Youghal Cycling Club Notes – Sunday 20th May 2012

Summer League This week we held the sixth week of our Summer League. Again a big crew of 23 riders assembled this week. It was also good to see a few new faces, note that all club riders are invited to come along every week, as entries are always open. This week the league brought us back to the road race around the Gortaroo circuit. As the evenings are now getting longer we extended the circuit by one lap to make it a 36km road race. With five weeks of data behind us at this stage the handicaps are being fine tuned and it was very exciting to have a sprint finish of 16 riders racing down the last 500 meters of the Redbarn Road to the finish at the bird sanctuary. Taking his first green jersey of the series, saw Gregg Hill cross the line first and take the 10 league points. He was closely followed by Jason Collins and Anthony Keneally in 2nd & 3rd respectively. Public interest in the league is growing and it was nice to see some folks come out, see what was happening, and cheer on the riders. Again, thanks to the timekeepers and marshals that come out every week, please keep it up! If there are others out there willing to lend a hand then please do as safety is our priority and the more people we can have marshalling the junctions the better.

The top 10 riders in league table stand as follows:

Name Category TOTAL

Walsh, Tony 3 40

Treacy, John 5 35

Keneally, Killian 5 25

Fitzgerald, Maurice 6 24

Walsh, Ina 6 24

Broderick, Sean 5 22

Healy, John 5 18

Keneally, Anthony 3 18

Flanagan, Ger 4 17

McCarthy, Ciaran 3 16

Round 7 will be held on Thursday 24th May. This week we will be having our 2nd hill climb of the series. Riders & marshals are asked to meet from 6.30pm at Summerfield Cross.

Sportiffs Next up in the sportiff calendar is the Duhallow Tour on June 2nd. This is being hosted by Kanturk CC and there are 75km and 150km routes. Also on the same weekend Carrick Wheelers will be hosting the Carrick Wheelers Challenge. Details are TBD on this event. We will have further detail on these as the events come closer.

Club Spins With the national body that governs cycling in Ireland, Cycling Ireland, holding the first ever bicycle show in the RDS this weekend all eyes were focussed on the trip to Dublin. No deals were struck on the day, but I would keep the eyes peeled in the coming weeks, as there were some folks paying a lot of attention to some nice bling! Aside from this we still had a crew of 10 riders assemble at Moby Dicks for the regular Sunday spin. This week the group decided to take in a hilly circuit and struck towards Co Waterford and took in The Vee route and on into Cloheen for the cup of tea. From here they went off out to Araglin and took the lumpy circuit home to Youghal with a difficult 120km on the legs before lunchtime. A second group of 8 riders also rolled out from Moby Dicks at 9pm. They also headed off towards the Waterford direction where they covered a 90km circuit. Our 10am group of 8 riders did their usual East Cork route covering a very sociable 50km.

Lads please take note that with the midweek racing and these long Sunday rides your bikes need a little maintenance to keep it running smoothly and avoid breakdowns. Please ensure that you follow these basic steps every week:

  1. General clean down of frame, rims, chain and gearing with baby wipes to remove excess dirt and oils.

  2. Check tyre surface for cuts and tears that can easily puncture. If the tyres are looking worn, please replace them. We suggest that you keep a spare new tyre so as you do not have to go out on a dodgy tyre.

  3. Check tyre pressure. Do not go out on tyres with low pressure as these are likely to get punctures from pinches with stones/pot holes in the road.

  4. Check brakes and ensure that brake pads are not excessively worn. Again we suggest that you hold spare brake pads.

  5. If your gears are jumping, sticking or rubbing just say it to one of the lads and we can have a look for minor adjustments.
