YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB NOTES 8th MAY 2011

Midleton Tour De Cure 7th May 2011

Midleton Wheelers held their 3rd Annual “Stephen Roche TOUR DE CURE in association with MyHome.ie" Charity Cycle Sportif last Saturday, the 7th of May 2011. On the day over 1500 cyclists took part over the various routes with 25 members of the Youghal Club taking part in either the 170km route, 100km route or the 50km route. In fact we had 4 female cyclists representing the club on the day.

We eventually rolled off around 8.45am and rode a brisk pace to Castlmartyr and on through Killeagh to Youghal where members of the club took to the front of a large group of about 100 to bring through Youghal. From their, we rode out to Clashmore and on to Aglish where the group split for the two different routes.

The 100km group rode on to Villarstown and Cappoquin before turning back the main road to Lismore for the food stop. Re-fueled, they rode on to Tallow and climbed up to Dungourney before dropping down into Midleton for the finish and some refreshments in the GAA Club. They completed the testing route at 2.30 pm.

The 170km group rode onto Ballymacarbry from Aglish for their first food stop where they quickly re-fueled and took off for Clonmel. From Clonmel they rolled onto Clogheen before coasting it up the Vee and hammering it down into Lismore, in the driving rain, for the second food stop. The group again quickly refueled and moved off towards Tallow. From Tallow they also crested the climb up to Dungourney where Ina put the he-be-ge-bes on the club over the lack of punctures. Sure enough, her husband Tony, the mountain goat Walsh, got two in succession and like any good wife she left him there to fend for himself. A quick double wheel change however sorted him out so we carried on through Dungourney and dropped down hard into Midleton for the finish at around 3.15 pm. Everyone satisfied with their first 170km spin of the year.

Hats off to all the organizers of the event as a very enjoyable day was had by all from the club who participated.

The Weekly Club Spin, Sunday 8th May.

With a lot of heavy legs around on Sunday last, a good group of 9 gathered at 8.00am and another group of 6 at 10.00am for the clubs weekly spin. The Sun was shining but by God the wind was blowing for both of the club runs.

The 8.00am group headed East and then North to Clashmore before making our way onto the main Cappoquin / Dungarvan road where we turned right into the block head wind all the way towards Dungarvan. This is where we stopped for the “Cup Of Tea “ and for some animals, a large chicken roll and a Breakfast roll, Tidy !!. Stuffed to the Gill’s we headed back to Cappoquin with the wind on our backs and slogged it out against the wind and up the climb to Knockanore. From there we dropped down into Youghal, climbed the bypass and looped around the town for a very handy 90km recovery ride.

The second group of 6 also gathered at Moby Dicks last Sunday morning at 10.00am for their weekly run. They covered a club favorite sheltered route around East Cork taking in Ballymacoda, Ladysbridge, and Castlemartyr for the coffee stop, Killeagh and back to Youghal for 12.45pm with a challenging 40km loop completed.

The Corkman 3 Day, Kanturk, Co. Cork.

Kanturk CC held their annual Corkman 3 Day event over the May Bank Holiday weekend with both Eoin Whyte and Jason Collins pinning on their race numbers for the weekend. Eoin took part in the A2/A3 event while Jason took part in the A4 event. Both lads rode strong all weekend, particularly Jason who also crashed heavily on one of the stages. In his race, Eoin instigated the break of the third stage which stayed away and was won by Damien Travers from Dungarvan. That was as good as it got for Eoin who was still recovering from a big effort in Manchester the previous weekend. Jason’s ride of the weekend was in the 5 mile Time Trial where he finished and amazing and a fantastic 8th out of a field of 50+. Keep this up Jason and you may get a ride in the RAS next year.

Club Monthly Meeting

Our Club Monthly Meeting took place last Wednesday, the 4th of May at the Holy Family Church, Youghal at 8.00pm. Again a good turnout was had and a good discussion took place on the Mizen to Malin head cycle which takes place over the June Bank Holiday weekend. The upcoming Vee Challenge was also greatly discussed with details and arrangements ongoing. Best wishes to the chairman who is currently recovering from a few trips to the Hospital, or so he says !, I reckon he was doing some secret altitude training up the Vee !

Midweek Spins.

Midweek spins are now in full flow and take place every Tuesday and Thursday evenings with a 7.00pm SHARP depart time. These spins usually take between 1.5hrs and 2 hrs to complete and are run off at a very high tempo to bring on everyone’s top end speed and get the heart rate pumping. A second group will shortly be organized to roll off at the same time every Tuesday and Thursday, but at a much more comfortable pace, so watch this space for details.

Weekend Spins.

As you are all well aware by now, there is a weekly spin every Sunday morning at 8.00 am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub by the Clock Gate and covers on average of between 100 to 130km. A second group also departs at 8.00am for a 4 - 5 hour spin, and covers a 100 to 120km distance. A third group also goes on a weekly spin every Sunday morning at 10.00am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub by the Clock Gate. This spin which runs on various routes every week usually takes around 3 hours to complete and covers on average between 30 to 40km. The pace is again very comfortable. This is an ideal group for anyone interested in taking up the sport. The Ladies group has also now kicked off for the year with a weekly spin departing from Moby Dicks every Saturday at 9.00am. New members or visitors to the area are always welcome to any of the groups. If you have any questions about the club or attending one of our weekend spins, please contact our Club Secretary Jonathan at 086-8563292 for details. Until next week, safe cycling!
