Youghal Cycling Club Notes – Sunday 13th November 2011

With a strong south easterly wind blowing last Sunday morning the usual brigade of Youghal Cycling Club began to assemble at Moby Dicks’s for the weekly Club spin. As we discussed the pro’s and con’s of the various routes we looked around and realised a fine group of 24 riders has assembled. Eager to get on the road we took the tried and trusted strategy of starting the ride into the wind and having it on our tail for the ride home. This brought us into West Waterford and we headed down into the picture perfect town of Ardmore. No time for a photo stop though as we continued on the coast road towards Dungarvan. The wind was howling as we rounded the beach at The Curragh. Heads down and trying to make ourselves as aerodynamic as possible we climbed towards the top of the climb at Ballycurreen. At this stage there was no talk, except from one or two that were discussing team tactics for next years A4 racing team, isn’t that right JC!!

We were all delighted with the fast descent into Dungarvan as we got a chance to spin out the tiring legs. The games were to continue with the peleton leaders as they rolled the group past the anticipated stop at the Campus Service Station. “We must be stopping at Master McGraths” was heard mumbling from the rear, but as they rolled on past this also, there were war cries not heard in this area since the Burgery Ambush of 1921. With a giggle they shouted back that we would stop at Cappaquinn, true to their word we were tucking into the Coffee and Nutri-Grains 20 mins later. With the bellies full we decided to take the scenic route up to Bridane and down into Glendine before rolling into town with 95km on the legs at an average speed of 25kph.

The 10am group was significantly down this week as they had nervous exhaustion from watching the Munster game in the pub the previous evening. Those that turned up, set for West Waterford, into the strong headwind. There was much laughter as we passed JJ’s and there was a suggestion to stop for coffee and a bacon and egg roll. Temptation denied we went onto Piltown and down the back road to the lovely village of Ardmore. After this we went straight up to the N25 and headed for home with a nice tailwind all the way. At Rhincrew we split as some went home up the Tallow Road into the wind and the rest going up the bypass with the wind. It is noted that we found a grand coffee stop where we got coffee and apple tart for €1.50, but the location will be kept secret as we don't want the golden oldies calling in there every Sunday!

Highlights of the week have to be getting the Hamster back on the bike, we were missing him as he did all the Gym work. We were also delighted in the attitude that JW took when booking his recent trip to the States as he managed to plan it to minimise impact to his winter training schedule. Note that we are in the process of planning the Christmas Party, keep an eye on the Facebook page for further details.
