YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB NOTES 25th April 2010

The Weekly Spin! – Sunday 25th April.

On Sunday morning, a group of 9 gathered at Moby Dicks at 9.00 am for our usual Sunday morning spin. They headed out the main road to Dungarvan and turned left for Clashmore to get a bit of shelter. They rode through Clashmore and onto Aglish before turning up behind the pub for the assent up to the mast. With the climb complete, they rode over to the top of the sweep and dropped down into Ring for the scheduled coffee stop. They got going again and took the coast road from Ring, through An Ghaeltacht, Ardmore, Piltown and home to Youghal. They arrived back in Youghal for around 12.00 pm with 70km in the legs. Another nice spin on the day.

The 10 O’ Clock group consisting of 4 riders also gathered on the good morning and traveled out the Bog road to Ballymacoda, through Ladysbridge and then the back road to Lockadera and Midleton before turning back onto the main road and Home to Youghal through, Castlemartyr and Killeagh. Another comfortable 50km completed for those who participated.

Kilmallock CC Club Tour

Kilmallock CC held the first big organized tour of the year last Sunday and a group of seven members from Youghal CC traveled up to participate. A mass start of over 200 riders commenced at around 9.30 with a mountainous route of 120km to be completed.

The Hub Challenge, as it was called, left from the Library in Kilmallock and headed straight for Ardpatrick, beyond ArdPatrick the route turned right and into the first climb of the day up through Glenenaar passing the Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trails on the right hand side, over the top of the mountain and down into Co. Cork, the route then turned right and headed towards the main Kildorrery to Ardpatrick Road over the second climb of the day, this one being more gentle than the first. Left on the main Kildorrery road and then right for the village of Ballyorgan, a tester of a climb through the village and then straight to Kilfinane, right in Kilfinane heading for Ballylanders and into Ballintubber, the fourth climb of the day, a long decent then into ballylanders where the route will cross the main Mitchelstown road and headed for Galbally, the route turned right in Galbally and headed through the Glen of Aherlow, crossing into Tipperary with the Galtee mountains on your right hand side, in the village of Aherlow the route turned right and up over the last climb of the day, Christ the King, and what a leg breaker this was. A fast decent heading towards Tipperary town before turning left to avoid the main part of the town and onto the main Tipperary Galbally road, further down this road the route turned right for the village of Lattin for the food stop. Once refueled we headed to Emily and then on through Knocklong Village where we turned right for Hospital Town, Left in Hospital and onto Knockainey village and on to Holycross. The route then turned left in Holycross for the town of Bruff, straight through Bruff and along the final stretch back to Kilmallock, where we were greated with some fantastic refreshments and some finely roasted pig for all the participants. A great day on the bike and a great start to the sportive season.

Congratulations

Congratulations again to local club man Eoin Whyte who pinned on the racing number for a second week cycling as well as shaving those legs again for the Silver Pail GP in Fermoy last Sunday. Eoin was accompanied by racing debutant Jason Collins from Killeagh who pinned on his race number for the first time to experience the leg breaking event of a Snr Cycling Race in Ireland. Eoin took part in the Cat 3 race which covered an 80km route at an average speed of 38km/hr. Eoin was unlucky not to make the podium as he was away in a break of two that was caught by the peleton just 2.5km from the finish so he rolled in to take a top 10 place in the sprint. Jason took part in the Cat 4 race which covered a 60km route at an average speed of 35km/hr. Jason done very well to finish in the peleton considering that he only started cycling last year and this was his first ever race. Fantastic results lads and we hope ye will keep it up.

Sympathies

Youghal Cycling Club would like to sympathize with Liam McLellan and family on the untimely passing of his brother Francis. We are so very sorry for your loss and our thoughts are with you and your family.

Get Well Soon

Get well soon to the two injured buoys of John Healy and James O’ Mahoney who recently rubbed wheels and ended up with some road rash after the sound of aluminum scraping along the road. Thankfully nothing was broken so we can now safely say that you both are officially real men of the road and full members of the road rash club. Get well soon and we expect you both back on the bike next Sunday.
