Youghal Cycling Club Notes – Sunday 3rd June 2012

Summer League This week we held the eight week of our Summer League. This week we were back to the 40km road race around the Gortaroo circuit. Over 30 riders assembled for the race this week demonstrating that the league remains very popular amongst Club members. With only three weeks left all riders were eager to pick up crucial points for their league standings. Strong riding in the middle of the field paid off this week as we had a group of 15 riders contesting a sprint finish. First to cross the line this week was the ever improving John Walsh, followed by seasoned cyclist Ger Flanagan in 2nd place and on his first outing in the league Conor Coleman sprinted in at 3rd position. Well done lads! Again, thanks to the timekeepers and marshals that come out every week, please keep it up! Special mention must go to Nicole Walsh for coming out every week without fail with her camera to capture the action. These are all posted on our Club facebook site. If there are others out there willing to lend a hand then please do as safety is our priority and the more people we can have marshalling the junctions the better.

The top 10 riders in league table stand as follows:

Name Category TOTAL

Walsh, Tony 3 41

Keneally, Killian 5 36

Treacy, John 5 35

Round 9 will be held on Thursday 7th June. This week we will be having our final time trial. Note that the best 3 of 4 scores stand for the time trial/hill climb combinations. There will also be 5 additional points for the most improved time of the last time trial. Riders & marshals are asked to meet from 6.30pm at Summerfield Cross.

Racing This week saw a group of 6 riders, Eoin Whyte, Tom Curran, Jason Collins, Dave Heffernan, Gregg Hill and Wayne Fitzgerald head off to Blarney to compete in the road racing series hosted by Blarney Cycling Club. All riders were in the A4 category, except for Eoin Whyte, who raced in A3. Conditions were very greasy on the road as there was considerable rain falling, but fortunately, the conditions cleared up an hour before the race to make for safer racing. Out first were the A4 riders to take on 4 laps of the 10km Blackstone Bridge Curcuit. From the off the Youghal team were in the front of the peloton. First time up the hill at the Blackstone Bridge climb there was a pileup as riders fought for position. Unfortunately, Tom Curran got caught up in this, and it was to be an end of his racing for the day. Each lap the Youghal riders maintained there position in top section of the lead peloton. Come the final lap a group of 30 riders were racing into Blarney at speeds in excess of 50kph. Facing up the last 750m, riders were bustling for position, for the final sprint. With a good wide road the Youghal lads sprinted hard and it was brilliant to have Dave Heffernan come in 3rd position, Jason Collins in 6th position, Gregg Hill in 8th position and Wayne Fitzgerald in 15th all within a few seconds of each other. Next up on the day was Eoin Whyte in the A3 group. They covered the same 10km circuit but did 8 laps of it. Eoin was involved in a breakaway group of 11 riders midway through the race and they maintained their lead all the way to the finish. Here they also had a major sprint for the finish line with Eoin coming in 7th place. After the days racing we had 6 riders coming away with 4 placings. A great days racing for Youghal Cycling Club and well done to all involved!

Club Spins With heavy rain forecast for Sunday a group of 18 cyclists headed off on Saturday to get their weekly fix of road cycling around the highways and byways of East Cork and West Waterford. Bright and early they headed off at 10am and covered a 90km circuit at an average speed of 28kph. That is of course except for John Healy, he was spotted powering up through town on Sunday evening. Rumour has it he was practising on the Killeagh – Youghal circuit for the time trail next week. Keep it up Johnny!

Sportiffs Next weekend, June 10th, we will be heading off to Co Wicklow to ride in the annual Wicklow 200. This is a challenging 200km route around the Wicklow/Dublin roads and mountains. The Club would like to wish all those going all the best of luck!
