Youghal Cycling Club Notes – Sunday 20th November 2011

With the bad weather causing our midweek spins to be cancelled we had large group of 28 cyclists gather at the Market Square for the weekly club spin at 10am on Sunday morning. We were discussing the various routes available to us, but this week we were all worried about how we would get to Inch Community Centre for 11.30am. Why you wonder? Well the reason was that fellow club member Jason Collins was having a cake sale in support of The Irish Pilgrimage Trust when he will be cycling 1000km to raise funds to bring young people with special needs to Lourdes. To say we were like Vultures soaring high in the Serengeti, waiting for the opportunity to pounce on our prey, is an understatement! Our route took us out the Bog Road and off towards Ballymacoda and on to Shanagarry. Before we got to Cloyne technical hitches struck as JW lost a vital piece of biking equipment – his saddle. We tried (in vain) to fix it, the brave Jim got on the bike, worked his quads well and took the long lonely road home. Hope you got back well Jim and did not have any slip ups!! After Cloyne it was on to Ballinacurra and Midleton with the hint of freshly baked scones was on our noses. We took the back road through Mogeely and onto Killeagh before passing through Mount Uniake and into Inch for the tea stop. It was worth it for sure. We were treated to a fine spread of fancy cakes, tea and coffee. Grub down and photos taken we were back on the bikes and worked our way up to the Tallow Road and back to Youghal. By the time we had done the bypass and back into town we covered a nice 90km route at an average speed of 25kph. It was great to see a few new faces with the group and let people know that this is the time to take up cycling as we are concentrating on the leisure side of cycling over the winter months. Quote of the day has to be from The Nutritionalist AK - “STEADY”
