Youghal Cycling Club Notes – Sunday 27th May 2012

Summer League This week we held the seventh week of our Summer League. This format of this week’s league was the 2nd Hill Climb of the series. Starting at Rhincrew Roundabout and finishing 8km later on the Tallow Road. Twenty riders assembled for this all out sprint. Many riders were not happy with their previous attempt, none more so that John Healy. Eager to improve he rode like a man possessed to take the Polkadot jersey this week and his first 10 pointer of the series. He was closely followed by Ronan Coleman in 2nd place and Killian Keneally in 3rd place. Comparing the two hill climbs it was great to see all riders improve their times on the last hill climb. Most improved riders were Paddy Keating and Dave Pickett. They improved their times by 5:41 and 4:43 respectively. Again, thanks to the timekeepers and marshals that come out every week, please keep it up! If there are others out there willing to lend a hand then please do as safety is our priority and the more people we can have marshalling the junctions the better.

The top 10 riders in league table stand as follows:

Name Category TOTAL

Walsh, Tony 3 41

Treacy, John 5 35

Keneally, Killian 5 33

Walsh, Ina 6 30

Fitzgerald, Maurice 6 32

Broderick, Sean 5 22

Round 8 will be held on Thursday 31st May. This week we will be having 40km road race around the Gortaroo circuit. Riders & marshals are asked to meet from 6.30pm at Summerfield Cross.

Sportiffs Last weekend saw two groups of riders head off to Ballymacarbry to ride in the annual Comeragh Cycling Challenge in aid of the Special Olympics. Club chairman, Sean Lawlor and his merry bunch of cyclists headed off early as they had great plans to attack Mahon early before the climb got too busy with other cyclists. It seems that Scobie was talking so much they missed the turn off and the opportunity to get the legs pumping up this category 1 climb. Devestated they proceeded on towards Carrick-On-Suir. Here they stopped briefly for water and some jellies to revitalise their energy levels. Next up they rolled into Clonmel before re-joining the Dungarvan road back to Ballymacarbry. League contender, John Treacy, was anxious to get some endurance training in to attack the final stages of the summer league. With this he road with some of his old club mates from the Blackwater Cycling Club. Meanwhile, the trio of Cillian McCarthy, Tom Hickey and Wayne Fitzgerald also entered in the event. They rode with a peleton of Dungarvan, Kilmallock & Tipperary riders. The pace was high with this group and it was good to see Tom Hickey successfully conquer Mahon Falls for the first time. A great days cycling was had by all in glorious sunshine with 120kms covered. Next up on the sportiff circuit is the Wicklow 200km Challenge. This will be held on June 10th. Keep posted for further details.

Club Spins A large group of 19 cyclists assembled on Saturday morning and took in a nice loop around the high roads and side roads of east Cork and west Waterford, covering 110km and arriving back in town in time for lunch. On Sunday morning a depleted group of 10 riders met at 8am. They headed east and took in the scenic route around Armore, up to Kiely’s Cross before descending towards Clashmore. From here it was onto Aglish, Cappaquinn and Lismore. After this they turned back towards Youghal to enjoy the Vintage Show.
