Youghal Cycling Club Notes – Sunday 15th January 2012

On a fresh Sunday morning, with a fine south easterly wind blowing, the peleton of 22 riders assembled at Moby Dicks for the weekly Club Spin. There was much deliberation about the route to take, but the Secretary and the Wyse Coach had it all figured out. We headed out towards the Deise and on towards Clashmore. With the legs warming up the Rabbits were getting excited and decided to drop off the back and have a sprint as they caught back up with the main group. Settled again we took a left Cappagh Creamery and headed towards Cappoquin and onto Lismore. As Tallow approached, the guys must have taken a swig of the Kangaroo Juice, ‘cos the games started again. First to break was Fitzer, once the door opened he was duly followed by The Planner, Sparky and The Heff, this week it was Sparky that took the Green Jersey. Freshly re-fuelled with coffee and bananas we went towards Conna ‘cos the Billy Goats wanted to do a little climbing. This week we climbed the wooded roads by Templevally and Kilnafurrey. There are a fair few cowboys in the club, but this week it was the Rubber Bandit that stole the headline, not prepared to admit that the ‘Hill’ had got him he decided to cover up by holding off the back and encouraging the couple of lads that were under a little pressure….you did not fool us Greg! Into Mount Uniake and down to Inch we then climbed back up to The Halfway Bar before switching back in towards Youghal and the usual sprint up the bypass. Biding his time all day, it was now time for the wily Bulman to make the attack. Happy in letting the Rabbits jump and burrow all day he spotted his chance, the Rubber Bandit attacked and blew, Fitzy was fading, all was left was Sanders. With no fear he shot up the outside and caught us all off guard. There were gears grinding as the chasing pack tried to find the right one, but it was too late, Bulman was gone and he duly grabbed the polka dot jersey at the Clashadunna Roundabout. All full of our fun we rolled back into town with a nice 95km on the legs after 3 ½ hours riding time.

The 10am group must have been up in Thomond Park the previous evening as there was only a handful of riders to assemble for their weekly spin. They kept it simple this week as they took the back roads to Midleton before turning back and taking the main road home.

Nice sized groups are assembling for the other scheduled spins and of course we are currently running spinning classes to keep the legs turning.

On a final note we had our monthly meeting and announced our annual tour will be held on the May weekend this year. We plan on doing the East Coast Challenge this year and cycle from The Giants Causeway to Youghal. We are getting numbers and costs together so those interested need to contact the committee ASAP.
