CLUB NOTES

The trail system, designed by one of the world leaders in the sport, is an exciting network constructed to give a challenging and rewarding ride. Each of the loops will present riders with a combination of narrow single-track and boardwalk sections and also has sections of forest road climbs over short and long distances. The trails are laid out in 5 loops with each loop leading onto the next. The loops are waymarked in one direction – just pick the colour of the loop you want to ride and follow the arrows. There is more information out on the trails at the start of each loop.

Facilities at the trail head include map boards, car parking, toilets, showers and bike wash facilities. Trail friendly accommodation, bike rental and good food are available locally. The Car park opens from 8am-9pm (Mon-Fri) and 8am - 8pm (Sat-Sun). There is a Parking fee of €5 per car but there is no entry fee to any of the Mountain Bike Trails. The showers and bike wash facilities are available at a cost of €2. More details are available at www.ballyhouramtb.com.

The first Loop to be tackled by Anthony was the Mountrussell Loop ( 17km ). The Mountrussell Loop is a technical and physically demanding version of the shorter Greenwood Loop and follows this as far as Waypoint 1, from where the trails become a bit more technical, narrower, rockier and steeper with more climbing and more descending. The loop features some steep climbs on forest roads and single-track as well as long single-track descents. All of the single-track trails have extremely varied and sometimes very uneven surfaces, including rocks, loose gravel, mud, water and roots and are often very narrow (not more than 1m wide) with lots of tight turns, encroaching vegetation and with trees and boulders very close to the trail. There are also long sections of elevated timber boardwalk with exposed edges and uneven and sometimes slippery surfaces. Follow the Brown waymarkers all the way to Waypoint 3 where you begin the inward leg of the Loop and eventually pick up the Green waymarkers that lead you back to the car park. Along the way you will pass Waypoint 2 where you can take a shortcut back to the car park by going left up the hill to pick up the inward leg of the Loop. All in all, this is a great loop to take for your first time at the park.

Overall, Anthony could only confirm that all the talk about this exciting new Mountain Bike Park was true. In his own words he said “ the feeling of excitement and the dangerous trill felt while riding the trails, and in particular the descents, could only be matched by the excitement and trill you felt as a schoolboy doing something you knew you shouldn’t be doing “. Mmm, wonder what he got up too when he was young !!!.

Next week, Anthony will have a report on his second trip to Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trail where he will have tackled the Garrane Loop ( 35km ).

Tour Of Spain.

Irish rider Philip Deignan (Cervélo Test Team) crossed a seventeen year gap last Thursday when he took the first Irish Grand Tour stage victory since Stephen Roche won a stage in the 1992 Tour de France. He triumphed on the eighteenth stage of Vuelta a Espana to Avila, beating Roman Kreuziger (Liquigas) by three seconds and also moved up to an excellent ninth overall.

Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trail Network is the largest trail network of its kind in Ireland and provides many options for off-road cycling in the mountains. Forest road climbs lead you into tight twisty single-track with loads of ups and downs, tight turns and technical rocky bits. The trails range from the moderate 6 kilometre Greenwood loop to the demanding Castlepook loop, over 50 kilometres in length! Tough forest road climbs are rewarded with sweeping fast descents guaranteed to leave you smiling!

YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB NOTES 20TH SEPTEMBER 2009

The Weekly Spin – Sunday 20th September.

Normal service resumed last Sunday morning when the peloton gathered as always by the Clock Gate, outside Moby Dick’s pub, for our weekly spin. Another good morning greated the peloton of 12 who were all looking forward to a lesurily 60km spin around East Cork. We left Youghal at 9.00am sharp and headed out of Youghal towards the bog road which took us on to Ballymacoda, over the high road to Garryvoe, through Cloyne and onto the Aghada / Midleton Road. From there we rode through Saleen and Ballinacurra before stopping for the espresso at the Garage beside the Midleton roundabout. From there we cruised home along the main road through Castlemartyr and Killeagh before all the huffing and puffing started as we rode over the Youghal By-pass. We arrived back in Youghal for 11.45am. Enjoying the good weather on the bike were Jonathan Tobin , Brian Sanders, John Flynn, Michael O’ Mahoney, Johnny O’ Mahoney, Anthony Kenneally, Ina Walsh, Elliot Murphy, Joe Dee, Don O’ Reilly and newcomers Martin Lynch & Tomas Roche. Well done to Martin & Tommy. Also spotted out on the bike that morning doing the sneaky training were the legends, Seanie Lawlor and Brian Fitzgerald.

Race Around Ireland.

While going to press, we were still awaiting news on how Team Youghal fared in this tough event. A full report will follow next week.

The Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trails

Over the last few weekends, local Club Man Anthony Kenneally has visited Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Park near Ardpatrick in County Limerick( about 75min. drive from Youghal ) to see what all the talk was about over this exciting new Mountain Bike Park. Here is what he had to say about the whole thing.

The Letterkenny cyclist was part of a sixteen man breakaway group that went clear approximately 50 kilometres after the start. He was one of the strongest in the move and broke clear near the end with former Tour of Switzerland winner Kreuziger, who finished ninth overall in this year’s Tour de France.

Deignan pushed the pace on the mainly uphill run to the finish, then manoeuvred Kreuziger to the front before the final rise up to the finish line. He proved too strong for the Czech rider and finished well clear, taking a dramatic – and well deserved – victory.

From there he successfully defended his excellent ninth place overall in the Vuelta a España to finish in that position when the race ended in Madrid last Sunday. In addition to that, he has taken the first top ten overall finish since Stephen Roche finished ninth in the general classification of the 1993 Giro d’Italia.

Congratulations to you Philip.

Weekend Spins.

As you are all well aware by now, there is a weekly spin every Sunday morning at 9.00am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub. With all the yearly objectives now completed, its time to wind down the miles and pace so that we can get organized and plan for next years objectives.

This spin which runs on various routes every week usually takes between 2 to 3 hours and covers on average about 55km ( 35 miles ). Sounds like a lot but it doesn’t feel like it when you a riding along and chatting within a group. The pace is comfortable and we usually stop half way around for a coffee or tea.

This is the perfect time for someone new to start with the group. With a steady pace and friendly people you are assured of an enjoyable spin. New members or visitors to the area are always welcome.

If you have any questions about the club or attending one of our weekend spins, please contact our Club Secretary Jonathan at 086-8563292 for details. See you all Sunday Morning !!.

Until next week, safe cycling !!.
