FORT IRIS GARDEN REPORT: Friday May 20, we had a work party at the fort. The iris beds were all cleaned from winter debris. Work party participants were Judy Blunt, Swede Gustafson, Rachel Ballard, Molly Mohan, Mitch Hall, Anne Bowman, Nancy Dold, Gary Clark, Lucas Harris, and Betty Ann Gustafson. Now it is all ready for the iris bloom and of course the winds will come too. Thank you all for your hard work. It is greatly appreciated.

The west and south walls of the Beardless Iris Bed (Siberian bed) showed their age this Spring as the blocks were crumbling and cracking. Therefore, these two walls were designated for repairs. I purchased 126 blocks at Lowe's on May 8 to begin this project. These blocks were placed into my pickup on Monday May 8. The blocks were loaded into my pickup for delivery to the job site as Lowe's could not get to delivery until later in May. I unloaded 64 blocks at the storage shed to lighten my load.

Betty Ann and I decided to replace the west wall during the May 12 and 13 garden spring cleanup days at the garden. I decided to repair the west wall first as it had some wall blocks falling apart which created a hazardous situation for visitors to the garden. On Friday evening Judy Blunt, Mitch Hall, and I tore apart the west wall. There were some OK blocks within the removed wall which Mitch Hall said he could use so these were set aside for him. As the wall was being torn down, I worked leveling the base so the new blocks could be laid correctly. As this process was being done, Judy and Mitch would bring the new blocks to me and I laid and leveled the first course. Then Judy and Mitch put down the second and third levels. Once we got all the blocks in place the beauty and safety of the new wall appeared. We loaded all the bad blocks first into my pickup and put them near the cab. The good blocks were then loaded into the pickup for delivery to Mitch's home which was done later that evening.

The whole process of building this new wall was done within 2.5 hours. On Saturday May 13, I purchased 3 caulking tubes of construction adhesive at Ace Hardware. Then my grandson Lucas and I anchored the top row of blocks in place to hopefully prevent removal of these blocks for other purposes which has occurred on the past years. We will repeat the process for the south wall sometime in June once the iris bloom season is completed. It was a fun project. Swede

Gary Clark relayed that financial and physical help will be needed by Region 11 iris societies, of which we are one, for the 2025 American Iris Society Convention in Billings. Jim Sadler made a motion the Missoula Iris Society help financially and voluntarily. Cindy Davis seconded the motion. All were in favor.

Median Show, May 20, at the home of Judy Blunt: We are waiting for the medians to show bloom. If there is a show you will be notified by email. If there is not a median show, we will have a garden tour.

The annual ice cream social will be held sometime after June 10. Judy Blunt will be making her wonderful homemade ice cream again. Details to come in June.

Missoula Iris Society Garden at Fort Missoula report given by Swede: Water has been turned on after a repair to a pipe at the museum building. Ron and Donna Dowell mowed and trimmed the grass in the garden. Dowells have graciously volunteered to continue to take care of the lawn. The large dirt pile from the installation of the pathways is all gone. A free sign for the dirt remained on all winter and this spring the last of it was taken. Blocks around the Siberian bed are deteriorating. They have been there for 25 years. They will be replaced. A work party will be scheduled soon at the fort garden. Watch for an email.

Cindy Davis reminded the judges their American Iris Society Ballots are due July 31 and must be sent in to maintain their judging eligibility. Also the Symposium ballot which judges and members can vote are due in August. Contact Cindy by email, cibby55@gmail.com, if you have questions.

There was a discussion on what members of the club would like as presidential rhizomes and who to order from. Swede will take on this project.

The 2024 American Iris Society calendars are here. They will be available in the fall for purchase.
