IN MEMORIAM, ERNIE LUCERO
Luther Ernest Lucero, a long time member and willing volunteer of the Missoula Iris Society, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 16, 2015. He was 89 years young. All who knew him loved him and he will be greatly missed.
Ernie was born October 25, 1925, in Trinidad, Colorado, and as a young child moved with his family to Riverton, Wyoming. He was one of 12 children.
Ernie’s wife of 42 years, Virginia, and two stepsons, Bruce Lee and Tom Kromidas, preceded him in death. Ernie is survived by a third stepson, Keith Lee. He also is survived by a granddaughter, Lisa Murphy, three great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter.

SALE REPORT by Carol Addeo
Our annual rhizome sale on Saturday July 25, 2015 was a huge success! For the first time since I can remember in my 16 or so year membership, we sold every single rhizome. We had no grab bags to pack up for the Farmer’s Market. This year we raised the price from $2 to $3 per rhizome, and although we had fewer rhizomes to sell this year, thanks to Fred Frey, who provided the majority of them, the quality of the rhizomes was very good and we were able to net a very nice profit to support our club programs. We’ll report on the totals at our next meeting.
Our club owes a big thank you to all the members who voluntarily helped both before and during the sale. I’ll briefly issue a quick thank you to those who helped and hope I don’t forget anyone. So many people helped in so many ways. Thank you Fred Frey for digging all those rhizomes from your garden. (Our club gave him a thank you gift of a very nice new iris from Mid America.)
Thank you Fred for handling the publicity. Thank you Ed Verplancke for printing all those card file pictures. Thank you Anita for assuming the filing of card pictures. Thanks to the following who were able to help before the sale cleaning, trimming, labeling: Swede, Betty Ann, Ed, Gary, Donna, Al and Carol and Dorothy.
Thank you Al Ledford for cooking the burgers on Friday night and for hauling all the tables to the Fort; thank you Swede for digging the Siberian iris and for hauling all the rhizomes in your pickup to the Fort. Thank you Betty Ann for making sure we had coffee, food and drinks during the sale and at the after-sale party, thank you Billie for hosting the after sale party again this year. Thank you Cindy for baking the scones for our breakfast at the sale.
Thank you to the members who were able to attend the sale and help with customers. They include Gary, Swede, Betty Ann, Ed, Bob, Roger, Cindy, Al, Carol and Dorothy (the bag lady).
MINUTES OF THE MISSOULA IRIS SOCIETY OF JULY 11, 2015
Missoula Iris Society meeting was called to order by President Donna Dowell at 7:00 p.m. at the Fort Missoula meeting location.
The treasurer's report was accepted as printed in the newsletter.
OLD BUSINESS
Rhizome Sale Plans – Ed reported that due to severe winter loss, there would be no digging at the fort garden. Some discussion followed on whether to have a sale this year. A motion was made to have a sale as usual with the support of iris donations from Fred Frey’s garden. A show of hands passed this motion and a work party will be scheduled at Fred’s home to prepare the iris. Ten members volunteered to help clean and label. Swede reported he will dig 10 Siberian iris for the sale.
Carol passed the card file to Anita Cervenak; she will coordinate the card filing for the next year. Thank you Anita.
Plans for the sale include the following volunteer jobs: Breakfast scones made by Cindy Davis, Coffee pot and juice provided by Betty Ann Gustafson, after sale party food and drinks purchased by Betty Ann, cashiers Cindy and Gary, rhizome transport Swede, table transport by Al.
Ron and Donna Dowell will be out of town the weekend of the sale. They volunteered to host the September 12th meeting.
NEW BUSINESS
Work Party: A work session at the fort garden is scheduled for Sunday, August 2 for planting new rhizomes and weeding. The work party begins at 1 p.m.
Presidential rhizomes have been ordered by Ed Verplancke and expected to arrive prior to the sale. It was mentioned that our judges should be raising 5 year or newer rhizomes in their own gardens, in order to evaluate them.
Marchie’s Nursery: Gary reported that Marchie’s Nursery donated a $25.00 gift card to the show winner. Jim Sadler won that. Secretary Carol Addeo will send a thank you card to Beverly at Marchie’s Nursery.
Fort Garden Budget: Ed would like to increase the budget for new rhizomes in the display garden. This year we spent $467 on new rhizomes for the garden. A motion was made by Betty Ann to expand the budget to $867; seconded by Linda and passed.
Garden Weeder: Discussion of hired summer weeder Arthur Bufomo’s time and quality of work. Consensus was that the work is not satisfactory: he has only worked 10 hours when he should have worked more hours, according to Swede. Carol and Al will work with Arthur to improve the quality of work.
Presidential Rhizome winner: June winner Ron Dowell; July winner Cindy Davis.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
