November 2020

NOVEMBER 7, 2020 MEETING IS CANCELLED

CHRISTMAS PARTY IN DECEMBER IS CANCELLED

Due to the continued spread of Covid-19, our November meeting is cancelled. The Executive Board, President, Betty Ann Gustafson, Vice President, Gary Clark, Secretary, Carol Addeo, and Treasurer, Swede Gustafson, made a decision not to have meetings inside in small areas. The Board felt it may be risking the possible spread of Covid. This also brings up the question, will we have a Christmas Party in December? Again the Board’s decision was the Christmas Party in December should be cancelled. We will consider the status of our meetings for 2021 at the end of the year. Hopefully, Covid is under control and we can get back to normal.

Our 'Open Garden' at the Fort was very enjoyable. It was a beautiful fall day, great homemade apple pie by Judy Blunt, and fellowship with 20 members. Thank you to all who came to look at the garden and enjoy each other. We have missed being together.

Since there was a possibility that we would not have meetings for the rest of this year, we discussed the nomination of officers during our open garden event, October 3. It was unanimously adopted that the 2020 officers will continue for the year of 2021.

It is time to consider our budget for the year 2021. You will find a proposed budget included in the report from the treasurer. If you have any budget requests or concerns, please contact the treasurer, Swede Gustafson, at 406.544.9544, or by email, swedeandba@gmail.com.

Once again it is time for membership dues for the year 2021 . Please refer to the treasurer's report in this newsletter for the status of your dues. Please mail dues to Swede Gustafson, 3128 Eldora Lane, Missoula, MT, 59803.

The new iris in the garden are doing well. I wonder how they liked the 14 inches of snow they received? I am enclosing a list of all the names of the new iris. If you want to know how pretty they will be, you can look them up on the American Iris Society website, irises.org. This would be a good snowy day activity!

PLEASE TAKE CARE EVERYONE!

Betty Ann Gustafson, Missoula Iris Society President

FORT GARDEN INFORMATION: I am extending the club's thank you's to Judy Blunt for getting the bearded irises ready for the winter by cleaning the dead fans away and clipping the live fans down to 4 to 5 inches in height. As I write this little ditty, bucket loads of snow are falling to

cover the gardens to insulate the irises from the impending shock of cold weather this coming weekend. Just think, last week we were basking in 50 to 60 degree temperatures. I am planning to clip down the beardless irises at the end of the coming week as temperatures are forecasted to be in the 40's so this will make the 2 hour project enjoyable. I have noted almost all of the newer irises planted this fall have taken root and show some new greenery. I am sure there will be further time for these irises to show more growth before the real wintertime comes over the horizon. Judy, Betty Ann and I are still receiving many nice compliments on how the nice the improvements are in the garden. It surely bolsters our egos as we look forward to further embellishments in 2021 and beyond for our society's garden. Swede

Respectfully submitted,

SWEDE GUSTAFSON TREASURER AND 2020 FORT CHAIR PERSON
