COMMENTARY:

I NEED A COUPLE OF VOLUNTEERS TO REVIEW MY FINANCIAL RECORDS. LET ME KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE ONE. ONLY TAKES A COUPLE HOURS.

I have several irises potted and growing in my basement shop. There are four bearded irises which are doing nicely. Two have several fans about 4 inches in height and the other two have just a single fan of 3 inches. One I found on the lawn about the middle of October and decided to plant it just to see what it would do. About Thanksgiving a nubbin showed up which became a fan which now is growing nicely. So it goes with the saying which Rosemary Baier said at a meeting several years ago, “Irises are not perennials - they are eternals”. I also found a small clump of an unnamed Siberian at the west entrance to the Siberian bed at the fort garden near the new sitting bench. This was at the end of October and the plant was up against the exterior blocks plus was growing into the blocks so I decided to bring it home and overwinter it in my basement. I now have 2 spear leaves about a foot in length so it is recovering well from the move. Will be interesting to find out how these irises will do once I move them outside in the spring.

On a sad note, there was an announcement in the newspaper last week regarding the death of Iris Society member Ronn A. Dunn.

Ronn Dunn was a long time member of the Missoula Iris Society. He was the newsletter writer and also one of the Fort Garden chairmen when I joined the Iris Society in the 1980's. Ronn was a very knowledgeable person about growing plants - especially iris and dahlias. He was a good judge also. Many times I would stop on my home from work and chat with Ronn about growing irises and dahlias for an hour or more. I surely learned a lot about these flowers from Ronn. In later years Ronn became confined to a wheelchair and was in need of 24 hour care. Unfortunately in the later part of his life Ronn ran afoul of the law and was confined to care in a state hospital facility in Lewistown, MT. He was 76 at the time of his death.

Respectfully submitted,

Swede Gustafson, Treasurer

MINUTES OF THE MIS MEETING OF JANUARY 5, 2019

The meeting was called to order at 7:10 pm by Betty Ann Gustafson

Minutes stand as printed in the bulletin.

Treasurer’s report: Approved as printed in the newsletter, Swede stated no new bills submitted and there are no changes.

Calendars are available for $4.00 each. Dues for 2019 MIS membership are $10.00 each; they are now due.

Old Business:

Slate of new officers: Betty Ann Gustafson – President, Donna Dowell – Vice President, Cindy Davis – Secretary, and Swede Gustafson – Treasurer. Ron moved to accept the slate, and Carol seconded. All approved the slate of new officers.

The Centennial committee for the AIS is looking for articles on the history of the clubs. Judy Blunt will be doing an article for our club, information to follow.

There is one calendar left, cost is $4.00.

We need a show chairperson for the June 8th show in the mall. Betty Ann talked to Lauren at the mall; so far there are no changes in procedures at the mall that she knows of, with costs remaining the same. Donna and Jim volunteered to chair the show. At the next meeting we need to decide who will chair the sale.

Budget: The budget for 2019 was printed in the bulletin. There was a change in the fort costs from $700 to $1,000. Jim moved and Ron seconded, the budget passed with the change. All approved the change in the cost for the fort garden improvements. The change is for expanding the median bed.

New Business:

Anita wanted Betty Ann to ask if anyone else wants to do the newsletter. She enjoys doing it and it keeps her in touch with us now that they have moved, but wanted to make sure no one else wanted to take it up who was closer to Missoula than her. Also if you have a topic or an article you want to do for the newsletter on any gardening topic please submit it to her and she will gladly put it in the newsletter.

Dues are due at this time, Swede has all but 6 members’ dues paid. Dues are $10.00 per year.

New members Jack and Diane Welsh were at the meeting; they are a welcome addition to the club.

February’s meeting is at the home of Cindy Davis at 929 Cooley Street. North on Scott Street, over the Scott Street Bridge, turn right at the bottom of the bridge onto Cooley Street, go one block pass Waverly Street, second house on the right.

Betty Ann received an email from Leslie Lowney, she works at the Fort – she is willing to order new markers for the fort gardens. The one we have are from Bob and need cleaning. New markers come in a case at the cost of $250.00.

Billie informed us that Judy has a new book out and it is available at the Book Exchange, Letters from Yellowstone. Billie said it was a great read, she could not put it down.

Marie won the presidential rhizome for December and Morris won the presidential rhizome for January.

Betty Ann adjourned the meeting.

The meeting was followed by a slide show on perennial flowers for our area, given by Billie Gray. Great end to the meeting.
