JUNE MEETING, SATURDAY, JUNE 4, at 6:00 PM

Potluck meeting at the home of Mitch Hall, 1945 Alvina Drive, in the Rattlesnake area.

(Directions from the Madison Street Bridge: Head north on Madison, cross over the railroad tracks, go up Greenough Drive. Alvina will be on the right just past a large apartment complex on the left. You may also go east on Broadway, and turn left on Madison. Again go up Greenough Drive to Alvina. We will place a sandwich board just before Alvina with MIS on it. I know this is a quick turn around for our meeting since we just had our May meeting. However, we will be able to enjoy Mitch's garden and hospitality, enjoy each other, and finalize details for our show. - Betty Ann Gustafson, MIS President


PEONY AND IRIS SHOW, FRIDAY, JUNE 10, from 8:00 AM-8:00 PM, and SATURDAY, JUNE 11, 8:00 AM-6:00 PM, at the Holiday Inn in Downtown Missoula:

The Missoula Iris Society and the Missoula Garden Club have joined to present a Peony and Iris Show, “Missoula in Bloom.” It is in conjunction with the Western District Garden Club Convention. Schedules for both shows will be available at the meeting.

Volunteers needed for the iris show:

Thursday, June 9, from 7:00 PM-10:00 PM, set up for the iris show. This includes loading vases from iris shed at Fort Missoula, taking vases to the Holiday Inn, placing table cards, etc. Designers may want to set up their displays that evening. Flowers can be placed in their designs on Friday.

Friday, June 10, from 7:00 AM – 10:00 AM, we need 1 or 2 people to man the registration table where exhibitors register for the iris show.

Friday, June 10, at 10:30 AM, clerks are needed to assist judges.

Saturday, June 11, 6:00 PM, we will take the show down. We will pack vases, dispose of flowers, etc.

Awards Reception for the flower shows, June 10, at 4:00 PM in the Holiday Inn Atrium:

Heavy finger food will be served buffet style. Cost is $15.00 per person. Registration and payment for the awards reception is needed by June 4. Please remit to Swede Gustafson, Treasurer, 3128 Eldora Lane, Missoula, MT 59803.

Peony Lecture, free admission: Friday, June 10, at 2:00 PM-3:30 PM. LORE SAMPSON, OF RARITY PEONIES, MT. HOOD OR. will be the speaker. She is a hybridizer, and a National American Peony Society Judge.

Garden Bus Tour and Champagne Reception, Saturday, June 11, at 12:30 PM-5:00 PM. Cost $22.00: View the Reinhardt Peony Garden at the University of Montana and the Missoula Iris Society Garden at Historical Fort Missoula. A champagne reception will be held at the home of James Sadler, president of the Montana Federation of Garden Clubs and a Missoula Iris Society member. Please let Betty Ann know by June 4 if you plan to attend.

Missoula Iris Society Fort Missoula Garden: Since we are on tour June 11 in conjunction with the State Garden Club meeting, we may need to call a work party prior to the tour to spiff up the garden. We will keep track and notify you if it is necessary. Swede and Judy have fertilized the iris.

MIS MINUTES OF MAY 21, 2022

The Missoula Iris Society meeting was called to order at 7:10 pm. by President Betty Ann Gustafson at the home of Judy Blunt.

Iris Program: Prior to the business meeting Gary Clark gave a demonstration on median iris and structuring them for show.

Minutes for April Meeting were corrected second time – MIS donated $250 to the Missoula in Bloom iris and peony show and tour to be shared with the Montana Federation of Garden Clubs , not $200 as stated in the minutes.

Treasurer's Report - Swede Gustafson reported the checking balance. Ron Dowell moved to accept treasurer's report. Motion passed.

New Members. Three new members were welcomed. They are Celeste Jones of Missoula, Vicki Burgmeier of Missoula and Denise Severson of Victor.


OLD BUSINESS

Garden Handicapped Pathway – Betty Ann discussed the project for the disabled pathway in the Fort Iris Garden. She and Swede met with the Board of Trustees of the Historical Museum of Fort Missoula and the plan for the pathway was approved. They then met with Elizabeth Johnson of City of Missoula and are awaiting final approval.

Swede passed around the draft of the pathway diagram which will have 4” of gravel, to be compacted, then 2” of asphalt on top. Tentative cost is $6,750 to the asphalt contractor. The work is expected to be completed in August after the July 30th sale. MIS has $5,000 toward the work, and Ann reported that First Security Bank will donate $250 through the Summit Organization for the disabled. There are also possible grants from Fort Missoula and a Lolo Trails grant. Swede and Betty Ann are coordinating.

June Iris & Peony Show – Gary Clark, Chairperson for the peony show, passed out a brochure of information on how to enter the show, discussed invited special guests and entry divisions. There will be trophies for winners. The peony show is June 10, 11 from Friday, June 10 10:30 am - 8 pm. and Saturday, 8 am - 6 pm.

Betty Ann Gustafson is chairperson for the iris show. The iris show is Friday June 10th 8 am to 8 pm and Saturday June 11th 8 am to 6 pm. Ron Dowell and Swede Gustafson will pick up all supplies from the fort iris shed and deliver to the Holiday Inn. Three people are needed to transport the vases to the staging area and to place items on the tables. Two people are needed to water the iris during the two day show.

Set up for the shows begins at 6 am. Saturday. Judging is at 10:30 am - noon on Saturday. Clerks are needed. Show will be dismantled on Saturday at 6 pm for about one hour. There will be a garden presentation in the conference room at 2:00 pm on Friday, about 1 ½ hour long.

The garden bus tour is Saturday, June 11, from 12:30 - 5 pm. The bus cost is $22. The tour includes the peony garden at U of M, the iris garden at Fort Missoula and the home garden of Jim and Linda Sadler, which includes snacks and champagne.

Parking at Holiday Inn requires a pass so get the parking pass from Betty Ann. The Awards Reception will be held in the atrium on Friday at 4 pm. The cost is $15 including snacks. Members should register and pay all fees to Betty Ann by June 1. Those who help clerk will be reimbursed $10 for lunch money by the treasurer.

NEW BUSINESS

Apple Tree – Swede reported the apple tree in the iris garden has been trimmed and several large branches removed at a cost of $300.

Member updates: Eric Moulton is recovering from kidney and brain surgery. Bob Symes is recovering from knee replacement. Linda Sadler had a knee surgery and is due to have heart surgery. We wish them all speedy recoveries.

The annual iris rhizome sale is scheduled for Saturday, July 30.

The next meeting is Saturday, June 4, at 6 pm, a potluck at the home of Mitch Hall at 1945 Alvina Dr up the Rattlesnake in Missoula.

Presidential Rhizome Drawing – Donna Dowell is the winner of the May Presidential rhizome.
