MAGIC VALLEY IRIS SOCIETY ANNUAL IRIS SHOW – SUNDAY JUNE 1, 2008

Entries: from 8:00 to 10:30 am - Open to the Public-Free Admission from 1:30 to 4:00 pm

MIS IRIS SHOW JUNE 14TH - Show schedule for "Ringing in the News" will be passed out at the May meeting. Volunteers needed to help set up and volunteers needed the day of the show for clerks, runners, etc.

SCHEDULE FOR MAY AND JUNE Lots of things going on in May and June. Here is a tentative schedule:

Saturday, May 3, 10, 17 - 10:00 - 4 p.m. Building the "Iris Shed" work party at Fort Missoula. Need Volunteers.

Sunday, May 4, 11, 18, 25th - Work party at Fort Gardens at 1:00 p.m. to ?. Come out and weed your beds.

CARD WORK PARTY - Tuesday, May 6 - Card work party at 6:30 p.m.at home of Claudia Brown to update cards. Send your current iris lists to Alverta Symes and bring any new pictures of your iris to the work party

Sunday June 1 - 1:00 to ? Fort Garden Work Party - Everyone should come out for a "spruce up" before the tour. There will be a job for everyone, including labeling, weeding, spreading pea gravel, general clean up.

Friday, June 6 - Private pre-tour of gardens for all volunteers, meet at the Fort Gardens at 6:30 p.m. to carpool.

Saturday, June 7 - Self guided tour of 7 gardens 10 - 4:00 p.m. Greeter volunteers needed.

Friday, June 13 - Setup for the show at Penney's Court at 7:45 - 9:00 Southgate Mall Tables need to be wrapped, and all supplies brought in.

Saturday, June 14 - Iris Show at JC Penney Court in Southgate Mall - Theme is "Ringing in the News". Show starts at 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Cindy Davis is show chairman. Alverta Symes is the head judge.

Saturday evening, June 14 - After show banquet at Jakers at 5:30 p.m. with menu choices of 8 or 12 oz sirloin, almond crusted halibut, chicken parmesan, seafood linguine or an 8 oz prime rib. Do not have to reserve your dinner ahead.

Sunday, June 15th - Judges Training. Janette will hold a Judges Training class at 9 a.m. on the Sunday immediately following the Iris Show

GARDEN TOUR INFORMATION – JUNE 7

This year’s self-guided tour showcases the Missoula Iris Gardens at Fort Missoula plus six private gardens with a variety of sizes, themes and settings. Advance ticket sales are $10.00 per person to benefit the Iris Display Gardens at Fort Missoula. To purchase tickets in advance & receive a map call - 251-5833 or 829-8868.

Advance ticket sales will also be available at the following locations:

Doctor PC - Downtown, 225 N Higgins Ave - Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm

SHED REPORT - Many thanks to all the volunteers that showed up on a somewhat good day last Saturday. We managed to get 3 walls up. I’m hoping that this weekend, the weathermen know what they’re talking about and we should have 2 nice days. I will be starting again on Saturday morning around 10-10:30am or just as soon as I can rent another generator that will not weigh a ton that we can handle easier. I will report at the meeting about all the wonderful contributions that have made this project affordable. We have some very, very nice businesses in this valley that are willing to make donations of some very expensive materials to make this all possible.

MISSOULA QUILT GUILD - They would like to have iris flowers for display at their show on June 19th at the Big Sky High School auditorium between 3 to 5 p.m. Contact Tonia at 543-0650 if you can help provide iris for display. You can pick them up again on June 21 between 4-5 p.m.

2008 MIS IRIS TOUR – JUNE 7TH

Volunteers needed as a greeter for 7 yards onthat day, from 10 - 4. The private pre-tour visits for volunteers will be Friday evening, leaving the Fort Gardens in car pools at 6:30 p.m. Additional information on the tour later in this newsletter.

JUNE MEETING CHANGED – To Sunday, June 8th - 6:30 p.m. Meeting and pot luck at the home of Elizabeth Friesz in Alberton. Carpool meeting at 5:45 p.m. For those who wish to carpool, meet in parking lot on North Reserve near the sign for Grant Creek Shopping Center where "Granny's Buffet" used to be, across the street from Lowes and Costco. Be there at 5:45 p.m.

June Meeting Driving directions: Take Highway 90 West to Fish Creek exit (38 miles) Exit #66. Exit to the right & go to the right around the stop sign. Curve down toward the Clark Fork River, crossing the railroad tracks & coming to a T in the road. Turn left at the T. Cross the River bridge. You will drop off the oiled surface after crossing the bridge & there are a couple of very tall pine trees on your left as you drop off the oiled surface. Turn left here, making a right turn on the dirt road. Follow the dirt road past the first house on your left until you get to the end of the road. Her house is a large Ivory colored sided house at the end of the road. THERE ARE LOTS OF IRIS IN SIGHT AROUND THE HOUSE. PLENTY OF PARKING.

Minutes: April 5, 2008

The meeting was called to order by President Cindy Davis. It was moved by Alayne Hilditch and seconded by Alverta Symes that the minutes be accepted. The motion carried. A motion was made by Ed Verplancke and seconded by Roger Muir to accept the treasurer’s report as printed in the Falls and Standards. The motion passed.

Old Business

It was announced that the club is an official affiliate of the AIS.

Shed: Pete Addeo reported that the permits necessary to begin construction had been obtained. The cost was $166.00. Bids to do the forms for the concrete slab came in from $1600.00 to $3000.00. JTL will still donate most of the cement. The estimate for the wood to build the shed came to approximately $3000.00. This figure would use up the money contributed by The Friends of the Fort. Ann at Boyce Lumber is reworking the estimate to see if she can come up with a better figure. Pete was able to get the trusses at half price. All the trusses needed will come to $416.00.

The increase in cost over the original estimate is mainly due to two items. The first is the size has gone from a 12’ X 12’ shed to one of 12’ X 32’. The increase in size was dictated by the need to match the style of the existing building and to make half of the new shed available for use by the Museum. The second reason for the increase is simply that the price of lumber has risen markedly.

A question of the cost of getting power to the shed came up. That cost will be negligible as the power can be run to the shed from the adjacent building.

The question was raised about how to obtain the extra money to finish the shed. Currently the money available for the shed consists of the $3000.00 from The Friends and $800.00 set aside in the MIS budget specifically for the building of the shed. Both using the money in our savings account and using the money in the CD were suggested. The CD money would become available without penalty August 1, 2008. After some discussion, the consensus was to not worry about raising the extra money until it was actually needed. In the meantime, Ron Dowell moved that Pete be allowed to spend the money on hand, $3000.00 plus $800.00 minus the $166.00 for the permits, to construct the slab. Linda Sadler seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Show: AIS has approved our June, 2008 show. The theme is “Ringing in the News.” A rough draft of the program is done. The finished program will be available at the next meeting.

Jim needs help with the flyers.

The judge from Twin Falls, Janette Graham, will be staying at Gary Clark’s home. MIS will pay for her gasoline.

Janette will hold a Judges Training class at 9 a.m. on the Sunday immediately following the Iris Show.

It was noted that judges need to obtain at least two hours of training within a three year interval to maintain their accreditations. These classes do not necessarily need to be staffed by an outside judge. An accredited MIS judge can teach a training class if the class has been pre-authorized by AIS.

Tour: Volunteers are still needed to “yard-sit.” These people will sell and punch tickets and act as hosts/hostesses. To date the following have volunteered:

Flyers will be taken to the nurseries about mid-April. The Historical Museum has agreed to sell Tour tickets for us. Pete Addeo has also volunteered to sell tickets at his place of business, Doctor PC. A strong case was made for individual members to get out and also sell tickets.

Eight gardens make up the 2008 tour. They are located as follows:

The thought was expressed that we really need to line up gardens two years in advance of when they will be on the tour. People whose gardens are going to be displayed need time to ready their gardens for showing. Also, it makes life a whole lot easier for the Tour committee.

It was pointed out that MIS needs to establish a web link with Idaho.

New Business

Sunshine: Cards and flowers have been sent to members who are currently ill and/or hospitalized. Betty Ann Gustafson visited with Wayne and Hazel Richlie. They are both well. Wayne is quite weak. Neither is able to get out. Ronn Dunn is in the hospital at St. Pat’s. He is dealing with cellulitis. Ann Violette has more heart problems and is very sick. Rosemary Baier has developed another tumor and has also sprained an ankle. She is still going to work at Caras Nursery every day! Ken Baier’s breathing problems remain about the same.

Scrapbook: Donna Dowell brought a couple of examples of how to do the scrapbook. One was the traditional way putting pictures and printed comments inside plastic pages in a ringed-notebook. The other way was to enter the pictures and text into the computer, to do the layout work, and to print out the pages that were being put into the book. She noted that the costs are about equal. The cost to do it on the computer would be $60.00-70.00. Donna asked if she could do the scrapbook on the computer. Elinor Utech moved that Donna Dowell be allowed do the scrapbook on the computer. Gary Clark seconded the motion. The motion passed.

Gary Clark suggested that maybe we could develop a “roving reporter” who could interview members getting pictures of their gardens and news about their other interests and activities. These stories could then be included in the Falls and Standards and perhaps on the secure website. Pete Addeo noted that he has been trying to get people to submit these kinds of articles.

The Presidential Rhizome was won by Anita Verplancke.

Ed Verplancke moved we adjourn the meeting. Pete Addeo seconded the motion. The meeting was adjourned.
