It was moved by Carol Addeo and seconded by Alverta Symes that the April minutes be corrected to read that the balance in the checking account as of March 31, 2009, was $3416.66. The motion carried. Carol Addeo noted that the April minutes stated that the Friends of the Fort would buy the paint for the shed when in fact Bob Brown said he would see if they would buy the paint for the shed. Carol moved that the minutes be corrected to read “Bob Brown would see if the Friends of the Fort would buy the paint for the shed.” Billie Gray seconded the motion; the motion passed. Ed Verplancke moved and Jean Macaraeg seconded the motion that the April minutes be accepted as amended. The motion passed.

Old Business

Zona Lindemann asked if Pete Addeo had checked up on other ways we might invest our money to get a better return than we were currently getting with our CD and checking and savings accounts. This had not been done yet so Swede Gustafson was asked to look into it.

Committee Reports

Median Show - Gary Clark, Chair: The show is scheduled for Saturday, May 23, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Iris may be entered between 7:00 a.m.and 9:45 a.m. Judging will begin at 10:00 a.m. The theme for the show is “Colors in Nature.” Fred Frey and Honk Meyer said they would serve as clerks. Alverta Symes will be the head judge. Others judging will be Roger Muir, Cindy Davis, Ann Violette, Swede Gustafson, and Lynn Weger. Joanne Gibbons will judge the designs. Show schedules were handed out to those who wanted them.

Jim Sadler asked if he could enter his designs on the Friday night before the show. He will be out of town on Saturday. Gary Clark, Show Chair, said that he could do that.

Posters advertising the show were handed out. The discussion that followed the handing out of the posters brought out that many of the stores take the posters down after a week. As a result, the information on the posters about later MIS events do not get advertised. It was strongly suggested that those who put up posters should check back weekly to see that the posters are still up.

June Iris Show - Linda Sadler acting in Chair Donna Dowell’s behalf: Linda Sadler reported that the show schedule has been approved by AIS. The banquet will be held at the Montana Club on North Reserve Street.

Fort Gardens - Billie Gray, Chair: There was a good turnout for the last scheduled work party and lots of work got done. Billie extended a huge thank you to all who participated. Another work session will be set up after the reconstruction on the Siberian bed is finished. The Siberian iris held over the winter will be planted back at that time. Zona Lindemann asked if it was possible to correct the misspelling on the “Species” sign. Billie also noted that the society would need a sign for the new versicolor iris that will be going into the Siberian bed.

Card File - Alverta Symes, Chair: Alverta reported that there was a good turnout for the last card file party. Six people showed up. The next meeting will be Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at Gary Clark’s home, 2275 Sunlite Lane.

Sale - Chair open: Gary Clark, who was presiding over the meeting, made a plea for someone to step forward and chair the Sale Committee. Alverta Symes said she would help anyone who stepped into the position. There were no volunteers.

The sale chair is in charge of setting up the digging of the iris at the fort gardens, transporting them to Addeo’s back yard and back again the morning of the sale, organizing the sale site, obtaining change for the cash boxes, lining up members to work the sale, and taking things down after the sale. Alverta told us that the tables for the sale have already been reserved. They will need to be picked up the morning of the sale.

Sale week activities are as follows:

Sun. July 19: Dig iris at the fort gardens, wash and trim them, and transport them to Addeo’s

July 20 – 22: Members drop off their sale iris at Addeo’s

July 23 – 24: Label the iris and organize for the sale

July 25: Iris Sale

Billie Gray noted that in the past we have mislabeled iris during the digging process and that was costing us both money and good will. She suggested that to correct this problem we should label each clump before digging it. Zona Lindemann also noted that a lot of named iris become “unknowns” because the labels are not put on tight enough and fall off. Pete Addeo suggested that on those iris that are either too small to tighten down on significantly or too large to even reach the first notch of the label should have the labels stapled to a good fan. Finally, someone asked that the blank labels be brought to the June meeting for members use in advance of the sale.

Shed – Pete Addeo, Chair: The back door and the soffits still need to be finished. Then the painting can be done. A date needs to be set to hang the back door and finish the soffits. This needs to be done as soon as possible. Swede Gustafson said he and Ron could get the painting done as soon as the shed is finished. Zona Lindemann said she would check with Bob Brown about whether paint or stain was to be used and who was to pay for the paint/stain. She was also to find out if the shed was to match the trolley building.

New Business

Roger Muir announced that the RVP term was about over, and we should consider having the new RVP come from Montana. After much persuasion Alverta agreed to stand for the RVP position. The AIS members present were asked to sign a paper recommending that Alverta Symes be considered for the position of RVP from our region. The signed recommendation was needed in order to get Alverta approved as RVP by AIS.

The Spokane Iris Society is holding a garden tour on Saturday, June 6, 2009. The cost is $45.00. Judges’ Training will be offered.

If anyone needs more posters to place around town, contact Carol Addeo.

Carol Addeo has updated the kiosk at the fort gardens. New pictures have been posted along with information about our Missoula Iris Society and about iris culture. The show schedule has also been put up.

Swede Gustafson suggested that we do a member profile in the newsletter. The profiles could be turned in to Carol Addeo, and she would see that they went into the newsletter.

The membership list has been updated again. The need to keep updating the list has come about because dues weren’t paid on time. Unpaid memberships were dropped from the membership list after the deadline. A membership is $9.00. Currently we have 45 members. Carol Addeo said she would send a membership list and a newsletter, if it is wanted, to any member with paid up dues or who has in any way actively participated in society events.

The Presidential rhizome was won by Gary Clark.

Ed Verplancke moved the meeting be adjourned. Roger Muir seconded the motion, and the meeting was adjourned.

Respectively submitted,

Zona Lindemann, Secretary
