Here is the January Newsletter. It's a fresh new year and hope that everyone will be in the best of health and happiness for the next, very short year. It just seems that the years go by far too quickly anymore and we just get used to printing 2004 on our checks and then we have to make 1000 errors until we get it right again.
IMPORTANT NOTE: It has come to our attention that next year, 2005, is not really our 25th anniversary year for the club. It seems that Elinor has done some checking and we broke ground at the fort in 1981 and started planting in 1982. So if you do the math, that would make our 25th anniversary year 2006. So we have really gotten a big head start on all the planning and setup for the event. We will now have plenty of time to really plan for the big event and get everything in order well in advance.

Annual Dues - Dues for 2005 are now due at the new rate of $8.00 per person Please pay your dues in January to Zona Lindemann, Membership Chairman or Swede Gustafson, Treasurer.
Meeting Locations: Organized by Carol Addeo. Please let her know if you can host a meeting this year at your home.
Lost and Found: A calendar was left at the home of Ken and Rose Mary Baier. If anyone purchased one but does not have it, that's where it is.
Calendar Orders - Anyone who wants a beautiful iris calendar for 2005 should contact Elinor Utech right away. You may call her at 549-1054. They sell for $4.00 each and they are really beautiful and useful.
Plant Markers - Swede has some big plant markers for sale at half price to get them out of his garage. They are the 2" x 4" markers like the ones used at the Fort Gardens. He has over 360 markers available for 30 cents each or 10 for $2.75. What a bargain.
Jesse Utech, longtime MIS member, passed away on December 8, 2004. Our condolences to his wife Elinor. His obituary may be read HERE for those interested.
2005 BUDGET UPDATE
The treasurer reported on November 24, 2004 that he has done some final calculations for the actual finances available for the coming year and Yahoo! there is more money available to spend. So he has slightly altered the figures from the ones voted on at the November meeting. The following figures do include projected income from dues, allow addition money for a visiting judge and the present ending balances for the checking and savings account.

Spring in Santa Cruz: Region 14 Conference
We offer spectacular iris gardens, mountains and sea, a conference venue near Monterey Bay, California, and a fun-filled weekend. Monterey Bay Iris Society invites you to join us for our first-ever American Iris Society Region 14 Spring Convention.
The 2005 Region 14 Spring Convention will be held April 30 -May 1, at the the Seacliff Inn in Aptos, California, a three star Best Western hotel.
MBIS will offer tours of four gardens on Saturday: an iris ranch, a mountain garden, a lake garden, and a suburbs garden. A highlight of the tour is the iris ranch (members of MBIS call it simply "the ranch"), which belongs to well-known iris breeder Joe Ghio. Joe's Corralitos ranch includes guest irises, seedlings, and newer introductions. This may be your only opportunity to visit "the ranch," and it is well worth the visit!
On Sunday, we offer a choice of judges' training with Vicky Dudley and Joe Ghio, or additional garden tours in the area. Sunday's garden tour may include a Scotts Valley farm that was once used as a stage coach stop; a formal mountain garden used for exclusive social gatherings; and a lovely Master Gardener's iris garden in Los Gatos.
We have reserved a block of 50 rooms at the Seacliff Inn for Friday and Saturday nights, at the excellent rate of $79 + tax per room, per night, double or single, including continental breakfast (regularly up to $169). The rooms will be held until March 29, 2005, but make your reservation early "just in case." Please see the registration form for details. Registration for the conference is $85, which includes the Saturday night banquet, speaker Joe Ghio, the bus tour Saturday, and box lunches for Saturday and Sunday. The banquet room has a capacity of only 150 people, so reserve your seat early! See the registration form for details.
