MINUTES OF THE MISSOULA IRIS SOCIETY BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The annual MIS Board and Budget Meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, November 7, 2015 at the home of Judy Blunt. The meeting was led by Vice President Betty Ann Gustafson in the absence of President Donna Dowell. Those members present in addition to Betty Ann were Treasurer Swede Gustafson, Secretary Carol Addeo, members Edd Verplancke, Anita Cervenak, Judy Blunt and Roger Muir.

Discussion of the 2016 budget followed. The final version will be posted in the January 2016 newsletter.

Items discussed included:

The Median show, if held, will be tentatively scheduled for Saturday May 21 at the Fort Missoula Building T-1. A chairperson is needed if we are to hold one. The main iris show in June will be chaired by Judy Blunt, who volunteered to chair the main show and will coordinate a committee to help her with the theme. Date for show needs to be reserved with Southgate Mall. Last year it was the first Saturday of June. That date would be June 4, 2016.

Discussion of display garden at Fort Missoula and budget items. Most of the newer rhizomes purchased in the last year or two have not lived more than one growing season. Perhaps newer varieties are not hardy enough. The renovation budget was increased to $300.

Brief discussion of peonies in the garden. Edd feels that peonies (and most perennials) do not belong in the iris gardens, because they conflict with the iris and overwhelm them. He has no objection to most annual flowers. Carol Addeo feels the peonies and other perennials in the beds, as well as annuals, add to the diversity and attractiveness of the garden throughout the growing season. This seems to be a basic two member disagreement. Noone else commented. It was suggested a vote of membership be held to decide this issue. Edd mentioned wanting to remove the Barberry shrubs, as they have outgrown their space.

udy Blunt offered Preen in a bucket to help control weeds. Edd prefers not to use it. Edd would like to add a second layer of brick in the big bed. Estimated cost would be $200.

Discussion of need to find an experienced garden weeder as contract labor next year.

Discussion of a need for a membership chairman who would put membership booklets together. We currently have about 10 packets left.

Discussion of need for a Regional Vice President. No information has come from Idaho as to who has volunteered and it is unknown if Jim Sadler will continue.

The tentative budget total for the year was $6,440. The final budget will be printed in full in the January newsletter.

Scheduled dates for the year were planned for all meetings and confirmed activities. Once these dates have been reserved with the historical museum, the schedule will be printed in the January newsletter. The meeting adjourned at 6:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Carol Addeo

Secretary

You will note I have simplified the budgets into 8 categories showing the total funds allocated to each category. I believe this will be a better way to inform the membership of where and how much of our funding is being designated and used. It will also allow me an easier method to do my bookkeeping within each activity of the budget. In the past I have had over 20 separate accounts to track our expenses which has become burdensome at times to which of these accounts to place a particular expenditure. If the above listing does not work out, I will return to the previous method of bookkeeping and inform the membership of my change.

Erling Gustafson, Treasurer
