February 2021

THE MARCH 6, 2021 MEETING HAS BEEN CANCELLED

Let's wait until April when we can possibly have meetings outside.

The Board met Friday, February 5 to plan events for the society in 2021.

Please read the minutes of the board meeting published here in your newsletter. After reading the minutes, we need input from you as members:

1. Do you as a member of the society want to participate in the annual iris show in June? Please email your response to Betty Ann Gustafson, swedeandba@gmail or call at 251-3526.

2. Do you want the society to bring in Patrick Spence, a grower of Siberian irises, to give judges training which will include all of us? Our judges would receive credit towards their certification and the rest of us would be participating as members interested in iris. (He was scheduled to come last year but we had to cancel this event due to covid.) Please email me your response.

3. The Annual Rhizome Sale is held in July. We will put off a decision until later in the year on the sale. FYI, financially we need a sale since we did not have one last year.

Betty Ann Gustafson, President

MISSOULA IRIS SOCIETY BOARD MEETING OF FEBRUARY 5, 2021

The board meeting was called to order at 1:30 p.m. at an open meeting location in Southgate Mall. Present were President Betty Ann Gustafson, Vice President Gary Clark, Treasurer Swede Gustafson and Secretary Carol Addeo.

2021 Show Plans – Discussion of options whether a show will be possible in the current pandemic atmosphere, and options of where and when to hold. After a review of the requirement of Holiday Inn Parkside Downtown health requirements and restrictions, it was decided not to use the Holiday Inn. Gary will notify the hospitality management.

A brief discussion of using Southgate Mall at the location near the clock where the rose garden holds their show. Betty Ann and Gary will explore this option further with Mall management. Masks would be required and a 30 day cancellation notice would be in force to get our deposit back. A tentative date of June 12 was discussed. It was decided to leave the show on the calender until final decisions are made.

Options for an outdoor public rhizome show were also discussed, perhaps at the Fort Garden, but again the health department limitations would have to be enforced.

Garden Tour - Another option discussed instead of a public iris show was a members only multi event day on a Saturday in June, including tours of a few member gardens, followed by an outdoor/ back yard deck ice cream social at the home of Judy Blunt.

Median Show – It was decided to skip the median show this year.

AIS Judges Training – AIS Show Judge Patrick Spence of Lake Stevens, Washington, is still willing to come for our show and or/judges training on either June 5 or June 12. He prefers June 12. We would provide him with air fare, a hotel room for two nights, and meals. He could do two classes, inside or outdoors.

Discussion of fees to be charged to judges for their training will be taken to the judges for their input.

Twin Falls, Idaho – Gary announced Twin Falls Iris Society is having their iris show at their local mall in late May. Their mall wants them to have the show and they do not charge the club.

AIS Median Iris Mini-Convention – The AIS median mini-convention is April 22-24 in Oklahoma City.

Our display garden would have a few clumps needing digging but the yield from each clump would be only one or two rhizomes. It was decided to see how many members would be able to contribute rhizomes.

It was decided to survey our members regarding the various activities for the year and get their input.

2021 Budget – Treasurer Swede Gustafson presented a proposed budget for the year of $4,800. The detailed budget will be printed in this newsletter as a separate item.

The meeting adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
