Members:

Here is the Newsletter. The year is almost gone and all our activities are finished. We have all had a great year and we got a lot accomplished. Thanks to all of you who showed up for our final work party last Sunday. We sure got a lot of chores done and put the gardens to bed for the winter. It's time again to elect new officers.

The agenda for the meeting will be setting up a board meeting for October to set the 2007 budget and getting some new faces to volunteer for officers. We also need to see about a name for our newsletter. Think names and bring your thoughts to the next meeting. Weve had a good year for recruitment of new members, but we need a little help in getting them to come to meetings. An open discussion could be in order on this subject for the meeting as well.

DATE & TIME: Saturday, Saturday October 7, 2006 at 6:30pm with potluck dinner

PLACE: Home of Alayne Hilditch at 8885 La Salle Way in Grant Creek. Call 829-8868 for directions.

PROGRAM: No word on a program at this time.

"FYI" NEWS:

Nominating Committee: Elinor Utech, Chairperson for the Nominating Committee reports that lack of interest by membership in doing their political duty for MIS is underwhelming. Anyone out there interested in supporting our organization next year by becoming either President, Vice President, Secretary or Treasurer? All positions are up for grabs. The current President and Vice President have served their two year terms. The secretary has served eight years and feels it's time to let someone else have some fun. The treasurer has served for about 12 years and he deserves a rest! It would be helpful to have a treasurer who has knowledge of Quickbooks. It really is a warm feeling to participate as an officer. You not only enjoy making a contribution, but the experience enables you to learn a lot during the year. And it keeps you involved!

ATTENTION NEW MEMBERS: We have a nice informational packet to give you which includes a membership list, a discount coupon from Marchies Nursery and lots of great growing tips on iris, plus all the important events of our society. Come to the meeting to receive your packet, but if you can't come, call or e mail Carol Addeo and we'll mail it to you. Her e mail is carolyn@montana.com or call 251-5833.

NAME THE NEWSLETTER CONTEST

It has been brought to my attention that we should have a name for our newsletter. Bring your thoughts and ideas to the next meeting and we can have a vote on a name. The winner of the name will receive a 2007 rhizome as a prize. WOW!!

Rose Mary Baier - Everyone say a prayer for a quick recovery for Rose Mary. She and Ken were headed for Seattle the weekend of September 30th. Rose Mary is scheduled for major surgery on Monday, October 2 and will probably remain in the hospital about 3-5 more days during recovery.

December Christmas Party - We need a location for our annual Christmas Party. Because Rose Mary may have a long recovery from major surgery, she has notified us that the Baier's will not be able to host the Christmas Party at their home this year. We usually hold it on a Saturday or Sunday early evening around the first weekend in December. Any volunteers for a home?

FORT GARDENS WORK PARTY - Thanks to all 11 members who participated in the final work party of the season. A lot was accomplished. The last work party of the year, getting the beds ready for winter, was held Sunday September 24 beginning at 1:00 pm.

We had a little eating fun afterwards, too, thanks to Pete, who grilled some polish sausage dogs and hamburgers. Thanks to Betty Ann for bringing the burgers and buns. And we had some great fresh foods, too. Honk brought fresh picked pears and tomatoes from his garden; new members Anita and Ed Verplancke brought a great coleslaw made from their freshly dug carrots. And Alverta supplied some wonderful dessert. All in all it was a successful day, thanks to Billie, Zona, Swede, Honk, Bob, Alverta, Gary, Ed, Anita, Pete and Carol. Carol picked up a load of fine grade road gravel on Tuesday and then another load of pea gravel from JTL on Friday. JTL was nice enough to donate the pea gravel again.

It's Their Birthday!!....Let's Give 'Em a Cheer!!!

Happy day to Gary Clark October 14th, Bob Symes October 30th, and Ernie Lucero October 25th. Have a happy birthday and all the good wishes and cheers that go along.

OLD BUSINESS

City Neighborhood Grant - Carol reported that the four arbors were purchased this summer with a grant from the Missoula Neighborhood project. The cedar arbors are starting to bleach from sun and weather, and will be allowed to stay natural, so maintenance is at a minimum.

Historical Grant - MIS has been approved for a grant of $410 from the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula to help cover the publishing costs of our historical booklet printed this summer. The books are for sale for $5.00 to anyone who did not get one at the celebration dinner.

Historical Booklet - Carol reported that copies of our historical booklet have been donated to the Historical Museum in Helena, to the Mansfield Library at the University of Montana and to the Missoula County Library. Thank you letters were received from Helena and from the Mansfield Library.

NEW BUSINESS

Garden Work Party - Billie called for a Fort Gardens Work Party for Sunday September 24th at1:00 p.m. to put the beds to bed and complete some plantings. A barbeque pot luck will follow about 5:00 p.m. or earlier if we get the chores finished sooner.

Pea Gravel help needed - Carol will pick up a load of pea gravel from JTL on Friday about 3:00 p.m. if anyone can come to help unload it.

Nominating Committee: The nominating committee will be Billie Gray, Bob Symes and Elinor Utech as chair. Positions available are President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.

Favorite Iris List - Carol has a request from the Tall Bearded Iris Society for their annual report on our Fort Gardens favorite iris. With the help of Gary, we came up with the following lists of favorites: Spanish Fireball, Uncle Charley, Superstition, McNames, Honk your horn, Announcement, Heart String Strummer, Habit, Rustic Royalty and Swingtown.

NAME THE NEWSLETTER CONTEST: Swede suggested we bring our ideas to the next meeting for a name of our newsletter. The winner will receive a new rhizome. NICE!

Card File: Alverta reminds everyone to get your new iris lists to her.

Presidential Rhizome - Ed Verplancke won the drawing for August, Honk Meyer won for September.

The meeting adjourned at 8:24 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Carolyn Addeo
