PROGRAM: Our guest speaker will be Gordon Skaggs who owns Habiscapes. He will give a program on water features for our yards, using Alayne’s pondless waterfall as an example of one type. He would appreciate being able to present his program after the potluck but before our business meeting.

Saturday afternoon between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm, Fred Frey's gardens will be open for viewing before the meeting. The address is 1760 Frey Ln, however, the easiest way in is to travel about 2 1/2 - 3 miles west of Reserve Street on Mullan Road and turn south on Homestead Drive. When the pavement turns to the west, just keep coming straight back and follow the road to the house and farm buildings..

ANNUAL RHIZOME SALE IS to be held Saturday, July 28 from 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Fort Missoula. Sorting and drop off location is Addeo's back yard in Linda Vista. Address is 5805 Helena Dr. Call 251-5833 for directions. Drop off your cleaned and labeled rhizomes to their garage between Tuesday thru 9 p.m. Wednesday prior to the sale.
WORK PARTY: The digging/cleaning session prior to the sale will be on Saturday July 21 per Ron Dowell, Sale Chairman, at the Fort Gardens. More help will no doubt be needed at the Addeo sorting location on July 23-25 Mon-Wed. Sorting of the iris will begin Thursday July 26th at the Addeo’s location, so help will be needed on Thursday and Friday.
FUN AFTER WORK PARTIES: No word on the usual Friday night after-sorting party. Perhaps there will be information about this at the meeting. Ron Dowell is the Sale Chairman and should have more information on all of this at the meeting. Call him at 542-1945 to see how you can help.
No word yet on the after-sale party which is usually held at Billie Gray's back yard beginning at 1:30 p.m. or so, after the sale is closed and clean up is completed. This is usually a pizza, chicken and beer party followed by an auction of new rhizomes provided by our Presidential Rhizome grower. This year the rhizomes will be provided by Mid America Gardens of Oregon.
MARKER TAGS WILL BE AVAILABLE
Ron Dowell will no doubt have marker tags available at the meeting for everyone who will be digging for the sale.
SHOW REPORT “Earth, Wind, & Fire” by Jim Sadler
I want to thank all of those who worked so hard to have, in the view of many who attended, the best Spring Show ever. We had 126 exhibits that were arranged in a new and viewer friendly venue. Special thanks to Ann Violette who was the Judges Chair and her selection of our visiting judges Beverly Petrak from Quiney, Wa, Phyllis Barnett from Wenatchee, Wa, and Phyllis Barnet from Wenatchee, Wa. Our local judges Lynn Weger, Ann Violette, Roger Muir, Jim Sadler, Swede Gustafson, and Gary Clark also had judging assignments. The judging of the show began at l0:l5 A.M. and was over at l:30. We had an awards luncheon at the “Arriva” in a private room, where we announced all of the awards. The lunch was enjoyed by all as we were able to visit unhampered by time restraint. Lunch was over about 4:00 when a good share of the participants returned to the show and visited or helped the public until show tear down at 7:30. Special thanks need to go to Ron Dowell who sat with the show while the rest of us went to lunch. Ron and Donna Dowell were indispensable to me in that they helped to transport the show materials from storage and helped me to return it. I would like to thank Gary Clark who was the Head Table Chair and helped the visiting judges in their selection of the various awards. Linda, my wife, deserves perhaps the most credit for helping me through the angst and worry about the show. She helped me with many details that greatly enhanced the show. She did the hospitality room, and managed the paper work. There were many members who helped in ways that are not mentioned here but was greatly appreciated. It was truly a group effort and all of those who participated should be proud of the results.
In the future I suggest the following suggestions. I would think that the ”Small Garden Award”, the “Flower of the Year” Award and the” Collection of Three Awards” need to be revisited with an eye to their elimination or change to allow more participation. The “English Box” description needs to clarified and perhaps pre-registration required. Pre-registration would ensure that containers are available. The new category for “Unknown” Iris worked successfully as an educational exhibit. There were 10 entries in the section. Local judges were able to identify many of the exhibits helping the exhibitors to enter their Iris in future shows as a regular exhibit.
I have submitted all of the paper work to AIS. As you should know, final approval is needed to affirm the Awards. Thank you for your confidence and help. Jim Sadler

RHIZOME SALE GUIDELINES
The MIS Rhizome Sale is Saturday, July 28th at the Fort Missoula Gardens starting at 9am - 1pm. The Collection point will be at the home of Pete and Carol Addeo. Rhizomes can be delivered to their garage beginning Tuesday of that week but no later than Wednesday by 9pm. Please read the Pre-Sale guidelines & Clarifications carefully. These guidelines were put together to avoid confusion during the sale preparations on Thursday and Friday.
1. Iris rhizomes shall be grown by MIS members only.
2. ALL RHIZOMES are to be WASHED, TRIMMED & LABELED as to variety and type PRIOR to delivery to the collection site. Trim fans to about 4 inches - 6 inches depending on type and roots to about 4 inches. MIS will provide labels. These labels should be stapled to the leaves. MDB's and SDB's should be in bundles of three rhizomes. IB's and MTB's should be in bundles of two rhizomes. Beardless iris are to be in clumps.
3. Iris varieties introduced 30 years or more before the year of the sale are to be labeled with year of introduction and separated from newer varieties.
4. Pricing of rhizomes is at the discretion of the sale committee. Age is considered but NOT color for setting the price.
5. All rhizomes are to be delivered to the designated collection site by 9pm WEDNESDAY preceding the sale.
6. Sorting, etc. will be done on THURSDAY and competed on FRIDAY. Chairperson to select committee of MIS members to assist in this process.
7. There are to be NO PRE-SALE orders.
PRE-SALE CLARIFICATIONS:
1. There is to be NO TRADING of rhizomes among members at the COLLECTION SITE. Members ARE encouraged to share or trade before bringing rhizomes to the collection site.
2. The sale chairperson shall determine which varieties may be traded/purchased by the MIS members. The trading/sale hours are Thursday, 6pm - 9pm and Friday, 9am - 12pm.
3. Members donating rhizomes may:
A. Take ONE rhizome for each variety donated (no matter how many of any one variety are donated)
B. Take LIKE variety donated (SDB for SDB, TB for TB, etc)
C. Take NO MORE THAN ONE (1) RHIZOME of any one variety.
D. May NOT choose from a variety that has fewer than SIX rhizomes in the box.
4. Members NOT donating rhizomes may purchase rhizomes (with the above restrictions)
5. Varieties 5 YEARS and NEWER from date of introduction will be so marked & priced accordingly. Fort Display Garden Chairperson has first choice of any varieties.
6. GRAB BAGS of iris rhizomes may be made up of unnamed or overstocked varieties at discretion of the chairperson by Friday.

Minutes of the Missoula Iris Society Meeting: June 2, 2007
The meeting was called to order by President, Elinor Utech. The minutes and treasurer’s reports were accepted as printed in the April Falls and Standards with the following amendments to the minutes and treasurer’s reports: The date for the 2007 Missoula Iris Show is June 9. The treasurer’s report was corrected to show that Fred Frey was paid $10.00 for postage for the Spuria Slide Show and the $54.00 originally allotted to Fred was to pay for the stain for the signs in the fort flower beds.
New members Jeanne Macaraeg and Scott Drake were introduced.
Reports
Median Show
The show went well. Sixteen people entered 72 horticulture exhibits that broke down into 84 iris entries and 16 design entries. The following suggestions were made for future shows:
A. Display more information about the July rhizome sale,
B. Make up a flyer that can be handed out that has all the information on it concerning the Iris Show and the Rhizome Sale, and
C. Display information more prominently.
Judges
All judges’ paperwork must be in by June 30, 2007. Send the paperwork to the new RVP.
Card File
The card file “party” is at Claudia Brown’s home Wednesday, June 27 at 6:30 p.m. at 216 Woodworth
Plant Markers
Pete Addeo reported that the only discount we could get on the steel markers was $10.00 per 1000 tags. That worked out to $0.65 per tag. It was decided that that wasn’t enough of a break to warrant buying the steel tags.
Storage Shed
Since our last discussion about building the shed, it has been brought to our attention that we must have the permits required to put up the shed and architectural drawings of the proposed building must be presented to the city. There is an architect who will donate the drawings. We will provide him with iris rhizomes for his work. It will take about a month for him to complete the drawings for us. JTL will donate half of the concrete for the floor slab. A contractor has donated his time for the slab work. The Friends of the Fort donated $3000.00 towards the erection of the building; MIS is to provide $1000.00.
Iris Sale
The tables have been reserved.
Iris Show
Many of the members who usually help with the show will be out of town the weekend of the show. Jim Sadler, chair, noted that other members would have to step up and help if the show was to go on.
Setup will be Friday night beginning at 8:00 p.m. Swede and Betty Ann Gustafson have the table cloths and burlap needed for the setup. Honk has the silver in his shed given for the various awards
Ann Violette is in charge of the judges. The three judges coming in from Washington will judge the show; five of our local judges will judge the seedlings and unknowns.
Elinor Utech and Linda Sadler will serve as entry clerks. Four clerks, a person to work the head table, and five judges are still needed. A person is also needed to handle the Hospitality Room. Housing is still needed for the guest judges. Five dollars is provided for the clerks and judges for lunch.

The program that followed the meeting discussed how to prepare and present iris for the show. One caution that came out of the questions and answers was that if you pick the iris the night before the show, be sure that they are stored in absolute darkness.
