PLACE: Home of Bob and Alverta Symes. at 3029 River Bend Dr, Bonner. Call 258-6649 for directions. As usual, grilled "Bob Burgers" will be on the menu, so potluck items should be complimentary to the great burgers.
PROGRAM: We aren't sure, but usually the September meeting includes selecting a nominating committee for 2010 officers, reports on the rhizome sale from the sale chairman, including final sale proceeds and member participation in the preparation and sale and perhaps a report on the status of the Fort Garden.

CARD WORK PARTY: Alverta Symes has called for a card work party on Thursday, September 10th at 6:30 p.m. at the home of Ed and Anita Verplancke. Their address is 517 Phillips; call 728-9376 for directions.
CHANGE OF ADDRESS: Cleo Swanson is still living at Hunter's Glen but her room number has changed to 148.
FUTURE MEETINGS: October 3 meeting is hosted by Swede and Betty Ann Gustafson, November 7th is hosted by Leona Wyckof and the December 6th Christmas party will be hosted by Billie Gray.
2ND MEETING IN JULY: The club called to order a special meeting on July 25th at Billie Gray's home after the sale. The meeting notes are below after the regular meeting notes.

IN MEMORIAM
Members of the iris society were saddened to learn of the passing of Wayne Richlie, a long time member of the society and hybridizer of Richlie Blessed. Following is the obituary from The Missoulian:
Lewis 'Wayne' Richlie
MISSOULA - Lewis 'Wayne' Richlie, 88, died Saturday Aug. 1, 2009 at St Patrick Hospital of natural causes. He was born in 1920 in Missoula to Ada and Raymond Richlie, the third of four children. Family circumstances changed the course of his young life and he was subsequently raised by loving family members, including great uncle Arnold Zaugg. He was drafted into the Army in 1942 to fight in World War II. He worked with code breaking and intelligence and earned a Purple Heart and a letter of commendation. In April 1951 he married Hazel June Stickney. They were lifelong companions, with three children born to them. Wayne worked at the Anaconda Co. and later Champion International in Bonner, retiring in 1984. He and Hazel had numerous hobbies. They were longtime members of Immanuel Lutheran Church and he sang in the choir for many years. Wayne loved music and had a beautiful singing voice. He also was an avid gardener and a farmer at heart who could grow everything. In his retirement years he enjoyed selling some of this produce at the farmers market. He was a member of the Missoula Iris Society and hybridized a beautiful flower that he named "Richlie Blessed." He also won numerous first place and grand prize awards at the Western Montana Fair for his flowers and produce. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Ada and Raymond and stepmother Alta. His brother Conrad and sisters Cecelia and Marian also predeceased him. He is surived by his wife Hazel and his three children, Jack (Anna), Marlene (Dave) and Gary (Sabrina), and his grandchildren Jack, Katie, Stephanie, Taryn, Shanelle, and Eric, and great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 830 South Ave. W., Missoula, with a reception to follow there. Memorial contributions may be made to Immanual Lutheran Church, St. Patrick Hospital or a charity of the donor's choice.
Minutes: July 11, 2009
The meeting was called to order by President Ron Dowell. A call was made to accept the May minutes as printed in the latest Falls and Standards. Gary Clark raised a question about the meaning of the first of two amendments made to the May, 2009 minutes. The original May wording said, “Billie also noted that the society would need a sign for the new versicolor iris that will be going into the Siberian bed.” The amendment in the June, 2009 minutes was made to drop the word new from that sentence because there have been some versicolor iris in the Siberian bed for several years. The sentence as amended at the June meeting now reads, “Billie also noted that the society would need a sign for the versicolor iris that will be going into the Siberian bed.” The discussion ended with the conclusion that the confusion was caused by the construction of the sentence and not by any error in the minutes. Pete Addeo moved that the minutes be approved; Alverta Symes seconded the motion. The motion passed.
The reading of the treasurer’s report was moved to later in the meeting.

Shed-The work on the shed is almost done. There is a little white trim to finish. That will be completed when the mosquito hordes subside!
Show-Many thank yous were extended to Donna Dowell for all the work she did as show chair. Everyone felt that this had been an exceptional show.
Sale-Iris digging at the fort for the iris sale will begin at 7 a.m. Sunday, July 19. Extra people will be needed early to help the diggers get the flats properly labeled. Billie Gray, the Fort Garden chair, will have the clumps to be dug marked before the digging begins. Washing, trimming, and labeling will begin as the iris are being dug. A plea was made for everyone who is able to come and help even if it is just for an hour. The washing-trimming-labeling process will go on all day. At the end of the day the iris will be moved to Pete and Carol Addeo’s yard.
Sale week activities are as follows:
Sun. July 19: Dig iris at the fort gardens, wash and trim them, and transport them to Addeo’s
July 20 – 21: Finish trimming and labeling fort iris
July 22 – 23: Members drop off the iris they are putting in the sale (The iris must be sale ready.)
July 24: Iris organized, bagged, and loaded for transport to the fort. STONE SOUP!

Rules and guidelines concerning the sale and the exchange of iris before the sale are posted on the web site. Everyone was encouraged to look at them.
New Digging Procedure: After the clumps are dug, place the iris in the provided flats. Secure the iris within the flats using the flagging that was around the clump. Write the name of the iris on the flagging. If the entire clump was dug, put the wire label in the flat. If only part of the clump was dug, leave the wire label with the undug portion of the clump. Carry the flat to the washing area. Take only one variety at a time to the washing area.
Stone Soup: All members are encouraged to come enjoy the soup Friday evening even if they are not able to help with the organizing. The soup will have a chicken base. Those who will be present for the soup are asked to bring some food item ready to add to the soup.
Tables: The cost to rent tables for the sale is $6.00 per table. MIS usually rents 30 tables for a total of $180.00. It was proposed that the society should perhaps buy tables and store them in the shed. It was quickly determined that the shed is not big enough to store that many tables and still be able to get in and out of the shed to get to the other items stored there. Also, it was noted that our budget could cover the cost of annual table rentals. The consensus, therefore, was to continue renting. No formal vote was taken.
Sale Day: Tables and canopies are set up early and the sale area cordoned off with caution tape. Members are to bring chairs. Cindy Davis, Donna Dowell, Alayne Hilditch, and Ernie Lucero volunteered to be cashiers. Alverta Symes said she would see that there was coffee for the workers. Carol Addeo said she still had bottled water left over from past events that she would bring to the sale. After the sale MIS members will meet at the home of Billie Gray for chicken and pizza lunch, for the counting of the proceeds from the sale, and for handing out the presidential rhizomes. The extra rhizomes will be auctioned off.
Presidential Rhizomes - Ron Dowell said the presidential rhizomes would arrive by July 20th.
New Business
Card Party - Alverta Symes announced a card party or two would be held in August and/or September to update the card file following the sale. Ed Verplancke has down-loaded about 400 pictures of iris for the file. These also need to be processed and filed for future sale use.
Fund Raiser - Roger Muir reported that Eloie Jeter paints iris on cards and sells them at some of the stores in the area. He suggested that it might be possible for us to sell these cards as a fund raiser. The cards wholesale for $2.75 each and retail at $5.50. The Southgate Mall provides space and advertising for organizations to do fund raising at the Mall during April. The idea was tabled for consideration at a future meeting.
Thanks - Roger Muir extended many thanks those who judged at the Iris Show for a job well done. He expressed a deep appreciation to the judges for getting their reports in on time.
Shed Door - Swede Gustafson reported that Bob Brown had the Museum’s carpenter make the back door for the shed. MIS, therefore, was asked to pay for the paint for the shed. Alverta Symes moved that MIS pay for the paint. The motion was seconded by Ed Verplancke.

Minutes: July 25, 2009 (Special Meeting at Billie Gray's)
The special meeting held at the home of Billie Gray following the iris sale was called to order by President Ron Dowell. Donna Dowell moved that MIS purchase two (2) new canopies using the money raised from the iris auction to pay for them. The motion was seconded by Ed Verplancke. The motion carried.
Bob Symes moved the meeting be adjourned. Billie Gray seconded the motion, and the meeting was adjourned.
Addendum
Ed Verplancke bought the old canopies for $5.00 each.
