At the April meeting the members present agreed to have Siberians given for the monthly attendance drawings. Therefore, I have sent off an order for 18 Siberians which includes 6 Siberians to augment the stock in the Fort Garden Siberian bed which has not had new stock added since 2010 with the exception of 2 Morgan-Wood award winner purchased and planted 3 years ago. These Siberians have been ordered from Ensata Gardens in Galesburg, Michigan. The 12 monthly award winners are a variety of colors, styles and years of introduction, with a total cost of $198.00 which includes shipping fee and will come from the yearly Budget values for our society. The 6 Siberians ordered for the garden are new introductions of 5 years or less at a value of $180.00 including the shipping cost. The $180.00 will be taken from the special Rhizome Purchases section of the Savings Account. Along with each shipment we will receive some bonus plants which will be available for sale to the club members. Since the order will not arrive until August we won't have these plants for the sale party. So will have to try a creative idea for the always interesting auction at the sale party.

MINUTES OF THE MIS MEETING OF APRIL 6, 2019

The meeting was called to order at 7:15 pm by Betty Ann Gustafson.

We started with a discussion on the state of our gardens in Missoula and the surrounding area. So far the consensus was the snow pack was good for us especially without the thaw and freezing we usually see. Depending where you live in the Missoula Valley and surrounding area the growth varies from garden to garden. Consensus is seems to be we are behind schedule in growth.

Minutes stand as printed in the bulletin.

Treasurer’s report: Approved as printed in the newsletter, Swede stated no changes.

Old Business:

Betty Ann stopped at the Mall to see if and when we could cancel the show if the growth of our irises doesn’t conform with the June 8th show schedule. We can cancel up to 30 days prior to the show without having to pay the mall fee. If we need to cancel after that time or within the 30 days we will still be responsible for the Mall cost. So everyone keep a good eye on your irises and keep Betty Ann informed. Carol Addeo has tulips coming up and is using deer off and it is working at keeping the deer away.

Swede got the State Corporation filing fee complete, he had to go to Helena to complete it. They had our password wrong, so he could not do it on line.

Jim and Donna as the show co-chair persons were not at the meeting due to prior engagements, but Judy informed us that they have sent the program in for approval.

Judy Blunt is working on an article for our club, for the Centennial committee for AIS, regarding the history of our club. The article is due by the end of July and will be printed in the AIS magazine.

Jody Nolin with the AIS contact Betty Ann and the AIS is looking for the oldest affiliated club. From the research Carol did when putting together the book about our club, it started in 1954 but at that time we were connected to the garden club. We were affiliated in 1956 or more than likely 1957 when our 1st show was held which was an affiliated show. Discussion followed on Club history and Book.

Betty Ann sent letters to members that do not come to meetings, she heard back from 4 of them. Thanks Betty Ann for reaching out.

Gary Clark will be Sale Chairman this year. Betty Ann and Carol would like to put together information on the responsibilities for the sale chairperson, from digging the iris, cleaning, tables, tagging and setting up. Betty Ann thanked Carol for all the years and time she put in being the Sale Chairperson.

New Business:

There is a state wide event scheduled for July 19 through the 21st. It is the Out Door Expo, which will be using part of the Fort, yet to be determined exactly where. The Historical Fort Museum has yet to be contacted so we are not sure if it will affect digging for our sale.

The new club The Big Sky Iris Society will not be holding shows. They raise money by holding Iris Sales at their Farmer’s Market 3 weekends in a row.

Betty Ann might need to make ribbons for the show, she found a ribbon with Iris on it, the club agreed to let her use it for the Blue Ribbons.

Fort Missoula Historical Board had a planning meeting; they are trying to get an idea for a report on what is the vision and/or what people want at the Fort, being more events, exhibits, and bathrooms. When they are finished with their report they will be meeting with the County Commissioners for more funding for the fort to put together a 3 to 5 year plan.

On a personal note, Carol brought up the cost now for the Missoulian, her cost went from $25 to $40 monthly. Considering the paper is getting smaller and smaller she feels it’s not worth it. Wanted to know what others are paying. Betty Ann said they pay a yearly fee of $152.

The 5 Valleys Dahlia & Glad Society will be holding their Tuber & Corm Sales on Saturday, April 27th at 8 am to 3 pm at Ace Hardware at Tremper’s Shopping Center & on Sunday, April 28th, Noon – 5 pm at Fresh Market South Reserve.

Lottie won the March Rhizome and Billie won the April Rhizome.

Betty Ann adjourned the meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Cindy Davis
