Important Information from Swede & Betty Ann about using mulch:

"Anyone using mulch around your house should be very careful in purchasing wood mulch this year. During the hurricanes in New Orleans many trees were blown over or severely damaged. These trees are being turned into mulch and the state of Louisiana is trying to get rid of tons and tons of this mulch to any state or company who will accept the mulch and haul it away. Much of it will be showing up in home centers and garden places at dirt cheap prices but will contain one huge problem. New Orleans is one of the few areas where the Formosan termite has gained a foothold. Many of the trees in the area have already been infected with the termite. Now we may have the worst case of transporting a problem to all parts of the country that we have ever had. These termites can eat a house in no time at all and there is no known good control against the termite. Therefore, please alert your friends and neighbors to avoid this product."

Home Depot and Lowe's were mentioned as two stores who were mentioned in the article. Other places that deal nationwide are possible sources for the product. Do not let sales personnel buffalo you by saying these have been disinfected or heat treated as these methods will not kill the larvae of the termite.

If someone has already purchased this mulch, have the product removed and destroyed immediately before the spring and summer warming arrives.

Alverta needs lists of your new irises. If you would like her to come and make one from your garden, she told me she can do it. Also, if you have magazines that we could cut up for pictures, please let Alverta know.
