Total income from the Tour was $595.50. Expenses for the Tour was $28.38. Budget was $400.00. Grand total net profit from the MIS Iris Tour came out to be $566.62.

Minutes: June 7, 2008

The meeting was called to order by President Cindy Davis. A motion was made by Linda Saddler and seconded by Ed Verplancke that the secretary’s report be approved as published in the Falls and Standards. A like motion to accept the treasurer’s report as printed was made by Ed Verplancke and seconded by Ron Dowell.

Old Business

Tour: The tour was deemed a success especially since the weather more closely resembled a mid-winter artic front than a spring day in June. The highest number of people to show up in any one yard was 53. Ticket sales brought in over $500.00. The exact amount is still to be determined because all the bills had not been turned in. The expenses were not expected to be too much because some members donated some of the materials. Alayne Hilditch donated the signs and balloons that marked the tour garden locations. Pete Addeo donated all the printed materials.

Caras Nursery sold 11 tickets. Billie Gray sold 8 tickets at Farmers’ Market.

It was brought to the Society’s attention that one of the tour participants had suggested that the tickets of those who went to all the gardens should be entered into a raffle. The completed tickets could be turned in at the last garden visited. This was thought to have some merit. A discussion followed ending with a consensus that it would be better and easier to have coupons at each garden to give to those who had gone to all the gardens. These coupons would be for free iris to be selected at the rhizome sale. It was felt that the logistics of handing out coupons would be simpler than those of a raffle and would have the added benefit of luring more people to the sale.

Shed: The skin is all on. Now help is needed to do the roof. Work is still scheduled for each Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. Work is also being done on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. on. At least two people are needed at these work sessions; more would be better!

Fort Garden: There is lots of bloom. Members should look at the garden this week because it is peak bloom. Elizabeth Friesz reported that mulching with pine needles really helps the wimpy iris and those that are prone to rot.

Show: The show is ready to go. Help is needed Friday night to set up tables. Table cloths and runners will need to be placed on the tables. There are only 22 tables this year so it may be necessary to stage the iris back to back. The name tags are done and ready to go; the ribbons almost ready. Iris tags can be picked up at the end of the meeting or contact Cindy. She has more.

Judges for the show are: Alverta Symes (head judge), Gary Clark, Cindy Davis, Jeannette Graham, Swede Gustafson, Roger Muir, Ann Violette, and Lynn Weger. Carol Neil and Gary Clark will judge the flower arrangements. Clerks assisting the judges are: Donna Dowell, Scott Drake, Betty Ann Gustafson, Alayne Hilditch, Jean Macaraeg, and Tommy Thompson. Elinor Utech will cover the registration table. Show take-down will follow the banquet.

Banquet: The after-show banquet will begin about 5:30 p.m. at Applebee’s.

Presidential Rhizome: Alverta Symes and Fred Frey. Due to a snafu in the drawing process and in an attempt to be fair, two rhizomes were awarded this month.

Next Meeting: Jim and Linda Sadler, 1220 Clements Road. 728-4743 if you need directions. Jim says to bring your own lawn chair (BYOC) as they have some chairs but not enough for everyone.

The “August” meeting is traditionally held at Billie Gray’s house immediately after the Iris Sale, Saturday, July 26th. Please note that there is no meeting held in August. The September meeting will be at Leona Wyckoff’s place on Gooden Lane. Host homes are needed for the October and November meetings.

Ed Verplancke moved the meeting be adjourned; seconded by Gary Clark. The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Zona Lindemann, Secretary

PROGRAM

Before-meeting program: Roaming around Elizabeth’s iris beds oohing and aahing over her iris and iris seedlings. (And watching the humming birds!)

After-meeting program: Elizabeth introduced us to iris hybridizing. This was a hands-on program. Each person had an iris to pollinate. We were shown where to place the pollen so pollination would occur. More than a few of us found we were all thumbs! For those who couldn’t make the meeting, you missed a good experience and a lot of fun. Perhaps we can persuade Elizabeth to repeat this program again sometime in the future.

Thank you, Elizabeth, for a fun and informative program and for allowing us to browse through your gardens.
