"FYI" NEWS

Billie Gray requests that anyone who has a few minutes to spare, go over and weed at Fort Iris Gardens.. A comment from May 2006, "the Fort Gardens are in beautiful shape. Only one small bed remains to be weeded, and that will magically be taken care of before the June 17th events. It will magically happen when little MIS elves, who are so dedicated to these gardens that they put their own gardens on the back burner in favor of making sure her majesty the Iris Gardens at Fort Missoula shows her best face." Quoted from our history booklet "Fifty years of iris growing, 25 years of iris showing". by Carolyn Addeo and Pete Addeo.

MINUTES OF THE MISSOULA IRIS SOCIETY MEETING Saturday May 4, 2013

The meeting was called to order by President Ed Verplancke at the home of Swede and Betty Ann Gustafson at 7:35 p.m.

OLD BUSINESS

Minutes correction: The minutes of the April 2013 meeting as printed in the newsletter Falls and Standards were corrected as follows: Median Show: Set up and prepping two tables should have read 10 tables . Another correction regarding the main iris show: Skirting would be nice for the tables (10 tables deleted). The minutes of April 2013 were approved as amended.

Treasurers report explanation: The treasurer's report from the newsletter were reviewed by Swede with comments that Pete Addeo was paid for toner cartridges in the amount of $256 because he prints all the posters for shows as well as the newsletter's each month.

Southgate Mall rate: And effective immediately, the mall will now charge MIS $250 for each event held at the Mall. Stipulations include that we have insurance coverage for each event and any cancellations must be done thirty days prior to the event.

Benefits to MIS include some advertising at the Mall and on FaceBook. The MIS logo would not work on the advertising around the mall so a Siberian type flower was used on the signs around the mall. Some discussion on changing that logo. New requirements also include that set up must be within the Penney's Court, not in the hall because there are businesses nearby and table skirting will not be provided.

Median Show: The median show theme is The Sweet Fragrances of Spring, to be held May 18, 2013 from 10 am to 6:30 p.m. The show schedule was passed out at the meeting.

Showing iris: Betty Ann Gustafson passed out an article on showing irises; it is also reprinted on the website www.missoulairis.com.

June Iris Show: Betty Ann passed out the show schedule for Saturday June 8, 2013 10 - 8 pm Theme is Perfume Delights. Design categories are all perfumes. Alverta Symes is head judge. Posters were also passed out to members who will post them.

NEW BUSINESS

Judges training: Roger Muir announced a judges training workshop on Miniature Talls (MTB) on Saturday June 8 after the lunch break in the mall meeting room. All judges and judges trainees are welcome.

Mailing Instructions: Newsletter mailing instructions have been revised by the post office;Steve Hesla met with the postal people and explained the changes. Basically it's a one fold, no staples plan using tape to hold the open end so machines do not catch the staples.

Judges Trainee Donna Dowell - has been allowed to keep her accrued hours of training but must complete six hours of training by June 30th. The notice to AIS must be post marked by that date. She will receive training from Ann Violette on awards and ballots, Roger on MTB's and Swede will train her on TB's.

Ice Cream Social: Judy Blunt will check her schedule and set a date for the ice cream social at the June meeting. No meeting in July.

Margaret Sutton: Swede commented on the passing of Margaret Sutton, who visited here a few years ago with her husband. Margaret passed away during the period the family were moving to Star, Idaho. The club will mail a card to the son.

Fort Gardens - Billie Gray commented that not many people were able to show for the work parties, however they seem to be working on their own as they have time. Because there are so many weddings held there in the summer, we should try to keep the beds looking nice. Sundays make a better time to work, as there are not many weddings held on Sunday. Sprinklers come on between 4-5 am. Carol Addeo reported that she worked Saturday and Sunday mornings and most beds look in good shape, there are only three more beds that need attention. However, it is an ongoing need to maintain.

Museum: Swede reminded everyone that the exhibits at the museum are free to MIS members. In a recent museum newsletter MIS was praised by Executive Director Bob Brown. Quote: "The intrepid gardeners of the MIS make our west lawn a prime location for weddings every weekend of the summer".

Rhizome Winner for May: Gary Clarke
