November 2019

The November Missoula Iris Society meeting will be held November 2, at the home of Carol Addeo and Al Ledford, 5805 Helena Drive.

There will be a board meeting at 5:00 PM. All officers should be in attendance. Also any member of the society is welcome to attend!

The agenda for the board meeting is (a) planning the budget for the upcoming year, (b) planning the meetings, shows, rhizome sale, and programs for the year, and (c) the possibility of bringing in an AIS judge for our June show. The visiting judge will also conduct judge's training classes, which will be attended by our judges and any member who would like to learn more about iris. I would like to see our judges attend the board meeting since we will be discussing judges training.

Our potluck iris meeting will begin at 6:30 PM.

See you at the board meeting and the potluck dinner meeting!

Betty Ann Gustafson, President

TREASURER'S REPORT as of October 21, 2019

SAVINGS ACCOUNT:

Sept 18 Balance ..................$ 10068.21

Interest income.................................. 0.15

October 21 Balance ...............$ 10068.36

CHECKING ACCOUNT:

Sept 18 Balance..............................$ 813.15

Expenses Paid................................... 338.81

October 21 Balance......................$ 474.34

Expenditures Paid were:

To - Paul Ronaldo Sprinklers for:

winterizing the iris garden sprinkler system.....$ 75.00

purchase of a new irrigation controller................ 209.00

Total...................................................................................$284.00

To - Erling Gustafson for:

5 rolls of sod to return radial bed #4 to lawn......$ 30.00

1 lot of fertilizer for the sod............................................3.00

1 treated 4x4x 8ft post for the controller...............15.81

1 lot of wiring supplies to connect the

new controller to the existing circuits.................... 6.00

Total .................................................................................$ 54.81

Notes of interest: The new irrigation controller was purchased on Oct 17 and mounted and wired up on Oct 18. At the time of installation, I did program the times and days of operation into the systems so all we have to do in the spring is turn the controller ON and supply the water. I set the controller about a foot higher off the ground so a person doesn't have to stand on his head to operate the systems. The old 4 x 4 post had rotted off below ground so the old controller and post were always tilting to the left and very unsteady as the only thing holding them in place was the PVC conduits exiting the ground.

The new sod was laid in early October and is taking root and orange snow fence was placed about the area to keep the 4-footed and 2-footed creatures off until the sod really takes hold which will probably be next spring. The irises I planted in the north end of the Dykes Bed east section are taking hold.

Neither Fred nor I have heard anything from the North Carolina growers regarding the irises we sent them in September so do not know how their iris are doing. With all the tough weather the South is having it will be interesting to find out how our irises did.

There is still some winter preparation work that can be accomplished at the Fort Missoula Iris Garden, so if you are so inclined to assist in cleaning up the garden the irises will surely appreciate it. I see lots of people viewing our gardens when ever I have been there doing a project. SWEDE

MINUTES OF THE MIS MEETING OF OCTOBER 5, 2019

The meeting was called to order at 7:37 pm by Betty Ann Gustafson at the home of Swede and Betty Ann Gustafson.

Minutes stand as printed in the bulletin.

Treasurer’s report: July’s report had an error, checking balance is $813, saving is $10,068. We made $4,200 at the iris sale. Gary Clark sold grab bags at the Farmers Market, Billie sold a remaining 5 or 6 grab bags, so all of them were sold between Gary and Billie.

Fort Garden Report: Swede stated that a crew of 8 people gathered on June 4 and weeded the Siberian bed, big bed and portions of the north wing and east-west wing of the Dykes bed. Grounds were dry as the sprinklers had been turned off so the Dykes beds did not get watered. Swede had tested the system before Mother’s Day and the system was working. So sometime after that the system was turned off. Swede talked with the Museum people and he has bought a lock for the system and they agreed to the locking of the controller. Swede has the keys for it now.

Swede also noted there is still a need for people to visit the garden and pull a few weeds or other strange plants which do not look like an iris especially since the elms have seeded and are quick to sprout. Further the plan for the little guy bed is on hold until next year.

Old Business:

All the iris cards are back and refiled thanks to Gary Clark, we will need to get more flexy tags for the following year’s sales. Swede and Ron dug iris at Fred’s for the sale, Fred thanked them for the great job. Gary thanked everyone who helped with the sale. Swede sent a variety of Dykes to Dean and Diane Richards in North Carolina, Swede dug them. Some had 1 or 2 rhizomes. Swede dug, cleaned and planted back, Fred and Swede packed and mailed to Dean. We have a 1927 variety in our garden. Swede cleaned the median bed and the North facing wing, added black soil mix, which the club bought, fitted in a few new iris. West facing bed was a mess, 2 varieties not named, some not marked and were planted separately, we will find out what they are when they bloom. Arbor is falling apart because it is being watered by the fort sprinkler system, heads need to be adjusted. Presidential rhizomes delivered, Swede hoped they have been mulched.

New Business:

Gary talked with Jeanette Graham, Missoula needs judges training, she knows 4 judges that could come here. Next month is the budget meeting before the regular meeting, we need to discuss adding to the Judges training budget as we currently only have $432.00 set aside to bring in judges. We need a nominating committee for officers. Betty Ann Gustafson and Cindy Davis, are it. Gary Clark and Donna Dowell will be Co-Vice Presidents and do the shows next year. Christmas party will be at Billie Gray’s, will look at dates to see which weekend will work best. We need to put the fort iris bed to sleep, Swede will let us know when to get together to get it done.

Presidential Rhizomes: August: Gary Clark, Sept.: Cindy Davis, Oct.: Marie Nyquist

Meeting adjourned

Respectfully submitted, Cindy Davis
