Here is the June Newsletter. Thanks to Jim and Zona for handling everything in our absence. How about if the two of you take care of the next 5 meetings too??? Pleeeeze!!
Just a quick acknowledgement and �thank you� to my wife, Carol, who has feverishly been working on our club�s 25th Anniversary booklet. This project was not even planned and she has been putting off everything else for the last 2-3 weeks and working on reading every newsletter for the last 25 years and getting fabulous historical information about the club and its origins. She went back 50 years into our club�s history. This will be a showpiece booklet with over 75 pages of wonderful information and will be something to cherish and keep forever.
Let�s all get together for our wonderful club�s Anniversary month and help out wherever we can. Any bit of help will be appreciated as we have a full ticket in June as you can see. We especially need help in getting our gardens at the fort in shape for the tour and the celebration. The Mayor will be there and a lot of press. These gardens are our club�s legacy and we need to all chip in just a little to keep them looking their best.

PROGRAM: Perhaps there will be a report on the Portland AIS Convention which many of our members were lucky enough to attend. The rest of us had to stay home and work.

FIFTY YEARS OF GROWING, 25 YEARS OF SHOWING...MIS is 50 years old this summer, the Iris Garden at Fort Missoula is 25 years old this summer.
What�s Happening:
We hope everyone can chip in and help. June is our club�s big month, especially this year. We want it to be our Showcase month for celebration. If you cannot attend the work party times listed, please feel free to wander out to the Fort Gardens and do whatever needs doing. Sign up with your name and time to get credit for the volunteer hours.
Tuesday, May 30 � 25th Anniversary committee meeting, 4:00pm at Billie Gray�s home.
Friday June 2 - 3:00 p.m. Short work party at Fort Gardens to unload pea gravel from pickup. JTL is donating a pick up truck full and Carol Addeo will be picking it up about then. Help is needed to unload it onto a tarp.
Saturday, June 3 - 6:30 p.m. Potluck supper at Pete & Carol�s house, then a meeting to plan all the stuff and set up help committees.
Sunday, June 4 - Work party at Fort Gardens at 1:00 p.m. We could use some help spreading the donated pea gravel, so bring your wheel barrows and shovels. We will have arbors to set up and install, too.

Saturday, June 10- Iris Show at Southgate Mall - Theme is "Glory in the Garden". Show starts at 10:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Gary Clark is show chairman. Alverta Symes is the head judge.
No word on where the awards dinner is that evening, which usually starts at 6:00 p.m. so that info should be available at the June 3 meeting. Remember, the National Federation of Garden Clubs will also be in convention in Missoula that weekend so we want to make them welcome when they attend our show. Jim Sadler is host to that group.
Sunday June 11th - 1:00 p.m. Fort Gardens work party. Last chance for clean-up. Installation of arbors if not already finished.
Friday June 16th - 6:45 p.m. at the Fort Gardens. Private preview tour of all gardens for all volunteers working the tour or working the celebration dinner. We'll carpool from the Fort Gardens.
SATURDAY, JUNE 17TH - Tour of 7 gardens. 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Self guided tour. Tour is $5.00 unless you are working at one of the gardens. Volunteers are needed to host at least 4-5 of the 7 gardens and collect money. Volunteers needed to deliver water jugs, cups and tables to each site. .
Saturday, June 17 - Celebration banquet. 50 Years of MIS, 25 Years of Iris Gardens at Ft Missoula Social hour at 5:00 p.m. Dinner seating at 6:30 p.m. Mayor John Engen will be there to open our celebration and offer congratulations. Volunteers needed to host social hour, provide punch, serving, etc. Volunteers needed to help set tables, prepare for dinner, and decorate the tables. We need help preparing the table decorations
This will be a catered dinner served buffet style by Golden Corral. Cost is $25 per person. We promise it will be nice, with a tent canopy, round dining tables with white tablecloths. A bonus to all who come to our dinner will be a 65 plus page historical booklet taking the club and the gardens from 1956...the beginning to today, 2006. Long time members will really enjoy walking down memory lane. We hope everyone will enjoy it. Those not attending the dinner may purchase a booklet for a nominal fee.
We have 36 reservations so far. Saturday, June 3 is the date to pay for your dinner if you have not done so. Or send your reservation money to MIS, c/o Carol Addeo, 5805 Helena Dr, Missoula, MT 59803. Very important that we have paid, confirmed reservations because MIS will have to pay the restaurant for all meals ordered but not consumed. Only 5 have been paid for so far.

POSTERS NEED DISTRIBUTION
Pete has printed posters for our upcoming events and they are ready for distribution. Billie has already taken some to the nurseries. Fred Frey is working on our publicity, but we could use help in distributing more of the posters. Pick them up from Pete or Carol or call 251-5833.
GRANT APPROVED FOR ARBORS
The great news is that the MIS had been approved for a grant of $2,596 from the Neighborhood Project Fund Grant sponsored by the City of Missoula. The funds are to be used to purchase four arbors, climbing plants and the cement to stabilize them. The arbors have been ordered and should arrive by May 31, 2006.

Minutes of the Missoula Iris Society Meeting, Saturday, May 6, 2006
The meeting was called to order by Vice President Jim Sadler serving in the absence of President Pete Addeo at the home of Charles Hiigel and Jeff White, Victor, Montana.
OLD BUSINESS
Minutes - The minutes of the April, 2006 meeting were approved as presented in the April MIS newsletter.
Treasurers Report was approved as presented in the April MIS Newsletter.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Judges Training: Paul Black will be holding accredited judges' training Sunday, June 18 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The session will be held at First American Title, 1006 W. Sussex
Tour: The Tour Gardens have been set. The following gardens are included but not necessarily in the order of the tour.
1. Fort Gardens 2. Fred Frey 3. Jim Sadler 4. Billie Gray 5. Chris Rock 6. Alayne Hildritch 7. Bertie Pearson
Fort Gardens: The beds are in pretty good shape. Thistles are taking over some beds and portions of the lawn, but Billie will be spraying these. The dandelions are outrageous, but they, too, will meet their doom. A work party is set for Sunday, May 14, 2006, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Members will be removing old leaves from the iris in the big bed and edging those beds where the lawn has overrun the edging. Work parties were also set up for the following Sunday's beginning at 1:00 p.m.: May 21, May 28, June 4, and June 11 (if the garden is still not ready for the tour). Members unable to attend Sunday sessions are encouraged to work at other times as their schedules allow.
Show: Show programs were handed out. Setup for the show is Friday, June 9 at the Mall, 8 p.m. Lots of hands are needed so everyone was encouraged to set aside an hour or so on this evening. Publicity is still needed for the show. Green runners and plastic skirting will be used on the tables. It was suggested that skirting not be used, but it was pointed out that skirting was required by The Mall regulations. All MIS exhibitors are encouraged to bring an iris for the Peoples Choice Award. The group was reminded that spectators no longer vote on any iris entered into the show for People's Choice but vote only on those iris entered into the category 'People's Choice'.
Sale: The tables have been reserved. Alverta said she would be scheduling a "card" work party. There are lots of cards to be made before the sale!
Alverta moved to adjourn the meeting.

NOTES FROM OUTSIDE THE 'FORMAL' MEETING
A teaching, median iris show was conducted. Instruction on how to properly enter an iris was given to those who had not shown iris before. Different groups of judges judged the iris describing as they went along why they rated the flowers as they had.
Charles' pizzas were totally beyond description. Several people were overheard to say that they usually can only eat a couple of pieces but "fessed up to having SIX pieces" baked in the wood-fired oven and made from Charles' special crusts and toppings. And then there was the browsing through Jeff and Charles' magnificent gardens. There was SO much to see. It's an indescribable setting. Thank you, Charles and Jeff for sharing with us.
Ann Violette won the Presidential Rhizome. She assigned the rhizome to Charles Hiigel.
CAROL�S CORNER by Carol Addeo
Well, this is it. A couple of years of planning and we still feel as though we've been taken by surprise that June 2006 is here already and we need to have all our ducks in a row. Please come to the June 3 meeting to help where you can.
Our show is June 10th, our tour is June 17th and our Big Celebration banquet is the evening of June 17th, beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Fort Gardens. If you have not paid for your banquet dinner yet, please get your check for $25.00 per person to me by June 5, 2006. We need to reserve the numbers of diners for the caterer.
By the way, get out to the Fort Gardens this week if you can. If you don't, you'll miss the bloom. We should call this year the year of the "Early Iris Bloom". Who every heard of our bloom being over by the end of May, but this record heat in May has really made the iris happy...the Fort Gardens is a sight right now! And the gardens are looking wonderful...the absolute best I have ever seen them, thanks mostly to Billie Gray and Zona Lindemann, who were the only ones to show up for the May 7th work party.
In doing research for a historical booklet, I discovered that not only is our Iris Display Garden at Fort Missoula celebrating 25 years of showing iris, but our Missoula Iris Society is about to celebrate 50 years of growing iris. The Society was created in 1956, according to written documentation I could verify.
I like to call it: "50 years of growing, 25 years of showing"
Everyone who attends our celebration banquet will receive a copy of the historical booklet. I hope you enjoy it, because it was a joy for me to research and write. It will take us from the origination of the Society back in 1956 when the "ladies" of Missoula met at each other's homes, about 10 of them, and enjoyed spicy desserts like rum cake to today's celebrations. It will have tidbits of information on all the members in the past 50 years, their contributions, officers who have served over and over again, humorous excerpts from our newsletters, a listing of all the show themes for the past many years and lots of other interesting stuff.
Long time members who were there at the beginning of the gardens should really enjoy the walk down memory lane. I sure enjoyed learning so much about how the traditions started years ago and the importance of their contribution to the life of the Missoula Iris Society.
