The garden has drawn lots of visitors while I have been working on the Siberian Bed which is in better bloom this season due to all the rainfall and nice warm April. If you haven't been out to see the garden I would suggest taking time to view the irises.

Ed and Anita have spent considerable time weeding and cleaning the gardens. Thank you Ed and Anita. If you go out to visit take time to pull a few weeds. It is your garden too.

Respectfully,

Swede Gustafson, Treasurer

MINUTES OF THE MISSOULA IRIS SOCIETY OF MAY 7, 2016

Missoula Iris Society meeting was called to order by President Donna Dowell at 7:15 p.m. at the Fort Missoula T-1 building.

OLD BUSINESS

The minutes from the April 2, 2016 meeting were approved with one correction: Lynn Weger was in recovery from surgery for 16 months, not six months as recorded.

Treasurer report from Swede Gustafson reported a balance of $304 in the checking account. The treasurer report was approved as reported.

Ice Cream Social: Ice cream social is scheduled for June 8 at 5 p.m. Judy suggested that since there would be plenty of extra homemade ice cream, everyone should bring a friend to help with the weeding starting at 3:00.

Show Reports: The iris show is Saturday, June 4. Judy Blunt, show chair, reported Southgate Mall has all the information they need regarding tables, water buckets, etc. Donna reported two judges are lined up, JoAnn Gibbons of Stevensville and another judge from Sandpoint, Idaho. Anita will iron the tablecloths. Set up will be the night before from 8:30-9:00 pm. Anita will send an e mail reminder.

Judy is checking on reserving a private room at China Garden for the after show banquet. It will be the standard menu.

Elizabeth Friesz garden: Carol Addeo reported that she has been in contact with Elizabeth in Ft Benton and Elizabeth’s son in Texas.

The son will contact us when he comes to Montana in 2-3 weeks so that we can check on her iris gardens and perhaps update name tags during the bloom period if they consent to donating some of them to our society. Neither Elizabeth nor her son have committed to donating iris yet. Some of her iris are already in bloom. Elizabeth has three iris that she hybridized and registered, so perhaps we might find room for them in our public display garden if she would like.

Publicity: Fred has posters made up if anyone wants some to distribute. The posters were not available at the meeting.

2017 AIS Calendars: Swede will coordinate the orders for next year’s 2017 calendars if anyone wants to order. Price is $7 for one or $5.00 for 10 or more.

Plant marker tags: Carol reported she has ordered and received additional tags for the iris rhizome sale preparation.

Fort Missoula Garden Report: Edd Verplancke reported that his research found that Preen is not recommended for iris. Edd recommends that we not use any product not favorable to iris.

Edd reported that Anita has weeded all beds except 1, 2 and 3. Carol and Al have done the first Dykes bed and ½ of bed #1. Carol said they plan to return to finish the other half of bed #1. All beds are probably already in need of attention again, said Edd.

Sale Tables: Swede reported that Carol and Al have moved the heavy tables out of the shed (they belonged to Carol) and Edd has used a great deal of the landscape blocks stored in the shed. He may purchase more from Lowe’s and raise the baby bed as well.

Storage Shed: Swede mentioned that the storage shed, which was built in 2008 is in need of maintenance. The paint of green with white trim is fading and the façade needs repairs. The estimated bid from one painting contractor is $800 for one coat, $1600 for two coats. The Lotta Paints short sharkskin stain would require two coats. The soffits are in good shape but the T-111 siding has some bird marks. He suggested perhaps some members would volunteer to paint one day. He spoke with Matt of Historical Museum and the museum will pay for the paint. It is estimated that 5 gallons would be needed for the two coats at a cost of about $180, which the museum will purchase.

It was decided to have a painting work party in the fall. It was decided that since everyone is so busy in the summer, the paint work by members will be delayed until September 1-15 when it is cooler and we have more time. It was also discussed to have the painting contractor do the first coat and members do the second coat.

Federation of Garden Clubs: Jim Sadler reported that the Federation of Garden Clubs is hosting a flower show at Holiday Inn Downtown the evenings of Thurs and Friday June 23 and 24.

Region 11 RVP: Jim Sadler announced he was not eligible to be the RVP again because he had assumed and completed Ann Violette’s term. He said most clubs were voting to nominate Jeannette Graham to be the new RVP. A motion was made to nominate Jeannette Graham for Regional Vice President, the motion was passed and carried. Jim will send the voting results in to AIS.

Presidential Rhizome winner: Betty Ann Gustafson

The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 p.m.

Respectfully Submitted,

Carol Addeo, Secretary

Presidential Rhizome winners: September Edd Verplancke, October Judy Blunt, November Ron Dowell, December Swede Gustafson, January Linda Sadler, February Allen Ledford, March Roger Muir, April Fred Frey, May Betty Ann Gustafson
