The Goonies (1985)

The Goonies was the first big-budget Hollywood picture to put Astoria, Oregon on the map. After that, many more would be attracted to this small fishing village for its coastal town look & beautiful scenery (Short Circuit, Kindergarten Cop, Free Willy). But the Steven Spielberg-produced and Richard Donner-directed movie about a group of misfit kids looking for a pirate's long-lost treasure on the Oregon Coast came first. The movie has since achieved royalty status among 80's films, and many devoted fans from all over still flock to Astoria to retrace the steps of "them goobers."

The movie opens with a Fratelli jail breakout at Clatsop County Jail  (732 Duane Street). This has been converted into the Oregon Film Museum, which had it's grand opening during The Goonies 25th Anniversary. Not only do you have the chance to see the Jake's cell in the film, but several replica Goonies props and costumes are on display.

The football field where Andy has cheer practice is the John Warren Field of Astoria High School - although the high school itself is not located here (46.187817, -123.821274). Update: This location sadly is no more, as it was leveled to create room for an addition to Columbia Memorial Hospital next door.

The intersection of 37th Street & Highway 30 is where the police chase zooms past Rosalita. The shop in the background was part of a larger scene cut from the film (and on the DVD). The actual interior was used as well, but it is no longer a convenience store and is rarely open.

On the hill above town is the house where Mouth and his father are doing a sink repair at 32 Skyline Avenue. The actual interior of the house was used in the film too.

The dock at the end of 36th Street is where Steph bobbed for crabs, while the police chase resumed in the background. It looks quite different from how how it did in the film. For a long time it was open to the public as a spot to view the resident sea lions but today it is fenced off.

The scene of Data testing out the Pincers of Power was actually shot on the back side of the old mill at Warner Brothers, very near Stage 16 where the pirate ship set was located.

The Lower Columbia Bowl at 826 Marine Drive is where Chunk watched the Fratellis race through town.

From here, the chase transports us south to the town of Cannon Beach. They drive down the public beach access ramp on Gower Street and head out to the 4x4 beach rally in front of Haystack Rock.

The most iconic location in the film is no doubt the "Goondocks" where Mikey and Brand live at 368 38th Street. Head to the corner of Duane & 38th and you'll see a gravel driveway up the hill. Usually the owners are fine (and quite used to) people walking up and taking photos - but remember, people live here - respect their privacy). The actual interior of the house was used for the film as well, except for the attic (a set at Warner Brothers).

Right next door at the top of the driveway is of course Data's house, where he zip-lined across to Mikey's front porch and where Brand later steals his sister's bicycle.

As the boys leave town, they pass the Flavel House Museum at 441 8th Street where Mr. Walsh works.

Just north of Cannon Beach is Ecola State Park. To get the full experience, retrace the Goonies' bike route by following the windy, wooded Ecola State Park Road from the south entrance. These stretches of road were also where Brand followed & Troy pulled him alongside his car.

The last sharp right corner before the parking lot (45.917900, -123.971229) is where Troy finally let go, sending Brand sailing off the ledge in to the woods. This was also where the boys stopped and looked out at Haystack Rock. However, it's much more grown in today so there is basically no view from here.

After you park, walk directly west toward the water and the large grassy field. If you look to the NW, you'll the the approximate location of the "Lighthouse Lounge" (built just for filming and removed afterwards) (45.919949, -123.975703). The interiors were all sets built at Warner Brothers (there is no actual cave, so don't bother digging).

Walk south down the nice paved path. If you look back to the right, you'll get the boys' P.O.V. as they approached the hideout (45.919184, -123.974689). As you continue toward the ledge, you'll see a large knarly-looking tree. This is where the boys started walking over to the hideout (45.918546, -123.974673). Walk a little bit further down the trail and off to the left is the hill the boys dragged their bikes up (45.918277, -123.975094).

Much of the rest of the film takes place in sets built in Warner Brothers soundstages, and we even get a glimpse of exterior Warners offices standing in for the Astoria Country Club (34.149379,-118.340412).

The final scene of the film takes place at Goat Rock State Beach outside Jenner, CA. The lower parking lot (38.441002, -123.126247) is where the Goonies reunite with their families. The giant monolith on the beach to the north (38.441876, -123.126365) marks the spot where the sheriffs first spot them walking on the beach (38.435429, -123.121763).

The reverse angle of  the Goonies approaching were done on the stretch of beach (known as "Blind Beach") to the south of the parking lot.

The rocks on the south side of the parking lot (38.440951, -123.125732) are where Sloth takes the Fratellis up the beach, and where they all sit & watch Willie sail away
