Pee Wee's Big Adventure (1985)

Tim Burton's first feature film featured Paul Reubens as his iconic character going on an epic adventure to find his stolen bicycle. Most of the adventure takes place around Los Angeles

The opening Tour De France dream sequence was filmed on Mulholland Highway in front of King Gillette Ranch at 26800 Mulholland Hwy in Calabasas.

The final stretch, finish line and podium were filmed at King Gillette Ranch. The podium location was in the field on the north side. The two giant oak trees are still there and serve as a perfect landmark.

Pee Wee's house is located at 1848 Oxley Street in South Pasadena. I love that the current owners have maintained a colorful paint scheme!

Pee Wee takes his bike for a spin through North Hollywood Park at 5015 Tujunga Avenue in North Hollywood.

Pee Wee is showing off and eats it spectacularly in front of a group of kids at 1105 Milan Avenue. This is just down the block from his house. He approaches from the east side on Oxley Street. He then casually pedals off the same direction he came from.

He's next seen locking up his bike in front of 1320 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica.

"Mario's Magic Shop" would've been located directly across the street at 1315 3rd Street, but these shops have since been removed and replaced.

Chuck's Bike-O-Rama where Dottie works was located at 1334 3rd Street but the building has since been remodeled and looks unrecognizable. Pee Wee then goes on a search for his missing bike next door in front of the old Woolworth's building. This whole area looks a lot different now.

Pee Wee has an epiphany and goes to see Francis at 401 South Hudson Place in Central LA.

Next we see him and Dottie hanging a flyer in front of 1318 3rd Street in Santa Monica.

The alleyway where Pee Wee scares away the thugs and finds Madam Ruby's psychic shop is on the Hennesy Street set in the backlot of Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank. Tim Burton would return here a few years later for Batman Returns

Pee Wee hitchhikes on The Old Road in Newhall.

GPS Coordinates: 34.353358, -118.550229

Soon after being picked up by Mickey, they are seen driving north on The Old Road under the I-5 overpass (just south of the above location).

Just north of here The Old Road forks becomes Calgrove Blvd. and forks off to the left. This is where they split off from the truck carrying Pee Wee's bike.

Just a little further up The Old Road after the split is where they narrowly escape the police blockade thanks to Pee Wee's brilliant costume work.

Perhaps the most iconic location in the film is the Cabazon Dinosaurs at 50906 Seminole Drive in Cabazon, CA. Sadly, the Wheel Inn where Simone worked has since been leveled (although the sign still remains).

This sets Pee Wee off to The Alamo at 300 Alamo Plaza in San Antonio.

However, all of the following shots were done at Mission San Fernando Rey de España at 15151 San Fernando Mission Blvd. in Mission Hills. Sadly, the mural on the wall behind the tour guide (Jan Hooks) no longer remains.

The Texas bus station where Pee Wee sees off Simone was actually the historic Grand Central Air Terminal (now owned by Disney and closed to the public) at 1310 Air Way in Glendale.

The roadside bar where Pee Wee has the run-in with the biker gang was at 17529 Sierra Highway in Santa Clarita.

After seeing his bike on a show in the hospital, Pee Wee heads to Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, sneaking through the Gate 2 employee entrance at 4390 West Olive Ave

This leads to a prolonged chase through the studio as he takes his bike back. Here we see nearly every part of the studio and backlot, and there were deleted scenes featuring more of the now-gone Laramie Street western town.

As he rockets over the fence and into a neighborhood, this is actually the Warner Bros. Ranch. The house that he lands on is the Monster Squad house and as he lands you see the Bewitched house on the right.

He soon runs across a pet shop on fire and tries to rescue all of the animals. This is located on Hennesy Street on the WB backlot.

The big premiere of Pee Wee's movie is at the long-gone Studio Drive-In at 5250 Sepulveda Blvd. in Culver City. The jungle scenes in the film were clearly back at the jungle on the WB backlot.
